Hi, I may get flamed for this but here goes.
As a new member on here I hear a lot about how my Mamod engines have become expensive over the years but have they really? I don't know what my SE2/SE3 engines cost new back in the late 50s early 60s when they would have been sold but whatever they were are they really anymore expensive today? Sure eBay may well have pushed prices up (could be argued its pushed them down given the number for sale on there) However given the approximate 50 years since they would have been sold I think they still represent GVFM.
A good SE2s seem to go for around £45 and an good SE3 around £60 even less on eBay. BTW I got my SE3 off eBay for £43 back in 2004 off eBay. 50 years is a long time and there are still bargains out there to be had. Given inflation over 50 years I don't think the prices have rocketed at all and Mamod engines are still GVFM IMO. I do understand Mamod engines prices will have fluctuated and at the moment they maybe on the rise but they seem to rise and fall.
All in all I consider the prices to be at least reasonable. I sell and buy on eBay but I don't go over what I consider my top price when buying. I think we also have to remember that it takes just 2 people desperate for that "must have" item on eBay which will push the price up to silly levels, that's the nature of eBay. Anyway just my thoughts on the matter. _________________ Les |

Biddiots!
Thats reasonable Les, however the demand and desire for pre-war and flatbase Mamods has becaome silly in some cases, with people bidding any amount to get an engine and loosing sight of the real value of an engine, apart from their own, like you thats just my view.
here are a few price lists that may be of help and also illustrate this thread more...

Thanks for that very interesting indeed.
I was just 10 in Jan 1950 maybe a year later and around the time I got my first new SE2 engine bought from Hobbies in Liverpool for me by my uncle. I always lusted after the twin cylinder SE3 and until recent years I never owned one. Thanks to eBay I now have both models (my original SE2 vanished many years ago) I have little interest in the newer models or earlier ones come to that. I do pity those older than me collecting pre war engines etc and the prices such are going for. However the era I am interested in still go for what I consider reasonable prices. I guess older and more rare items will always command higher prices that's the nature of the beast. I suppose many buying older Mamod were born well after WW2 and are forcing prices up as a result. _________________ Les |

I suppose that in the end it's down to what you want to collect. More common engines, such as the majority of Mamods, are generally still avialable for reasonable prices. There is no need tp pay top dollar for an SE1 or an SE2 as there will be another one along soon.
The price an engine sells for on an auction site tends to reflect its rarity and how "fashionable" it is at the moment - the so called "forum effect". If the currently fashionable Mamod item appears on fleabay, the price goes way up, often out of all proportion. The rarer engines, such as Merseys or Wilsons will allways command strong prices.
Personally my interest is in the less well known British makes and there is usually healthy competition for these items. I generally would not expect to pay less than £100, at the moment, for a nice example. Once in a blue moon something really unusual appears and is not recognised for what it is. That is when you get a bargain _________________ www.steamtoys.co.uk

You've raised some good points there Les
And Mike and John have just about summed it up
These are my two SE3's
Mr Malins only made 1000 of the first one and this would be worth around £500 on ebay
He made around 70,000 of my other example and as you say these fetch around £65
I guess its all about the rarety

Now I wouldn't care so much for the first SE3 and most expensive one but as you say rarity rules the price. I am age related after all Your second SE3 now that's more up my street and of my era. Beautiful engine and a credit to you. Not saying there's is anything wrong with your older and rarer SE2 of course. Thanks for sharing both pic's of them. _________________ Les |

Very interesting to see the prices there Mike.
I was looking to see how much my Minor 1 would have been in 1977. I had in mind it was about five pounds but it might have been a little less? _________________ Chuff, chuff |
