When fitting (or re-fitting) an endcap, how 'good' a fit should it be prior to soldering?
My understanding is that there should be a small gap for the solder to flow - but how much of a gap?
I'm preparing to fit a cap onto an SR1 boiler and right now it's a very tight fit.
As I work through the list of jobs, this will crop up again and again.

| I try to get a tight fit with no slop ie firm to press on by hand and not fall off when upended . I apply flux to the joint then assemble apply heat and the solder should magically disappear into the joint ie get sucked in by capillary action |

An interference fit should be fine. The joints must be scrupulosuly clean though and use plenty of flux. Cleanliness is the key and impurities and the solder wont run properly. _________________

Idont like having tight endcaps, I always go for a 0.005" clearance on the cap, I find the solder runs much better as there is a space for it to go. _________________ www.mfsteam.com the home of the MFTwin and replacement parts for Mamod, Bowman, Hobbies and Cyldon Steam Engines
