I was there on the Saturday only. A very pleasant friendly show in a very interesting location. I took a few boats but only dared run Emma/Milvus on the rather forbidding waters of the canal arm. Plenty of room but a sinking did not bear thinking about. Who knows what lurks in those inky depths?
The water lilies were a bit of a problem but by running all the way round to the bridge, back down the other side, climbing into a half waterlogged hull, splashing through the hold, climbing out on the prow and leaning out at full length it was usually possible to rescue a stalled boat
I even managed to corrupt Steamy Jim
Next year a Streamlinea?
Back in the tramshed David Percival's latest production caused a lot of interest. It does everything it should but , like the steam shovel, needs more than the usual number of fingers.
All in all a very good day.

Very nice picture Fred - thank you. Not been to the Black Country Museum since I took a narrow boat on the Black Country Ring and stopped there for the day before tackling the Wolverhampton flight! Great place - the Beamish of the Midlands!
On a serious note about emergency recovery of sunken toy boats - have you seen those gadgets that boaties use on the keys that lift them up from the depths if lost overboard? There was one on Dragon's den a while ago I think. They're quite compact and they do work. Just a thought. _________________ Stephen

Very nice location, I agree about the canal depths . . . a sinking would be unthinkable, maybe attach a balloon of some sort or a flotation device to the boat's upper hull. Is that one radio controlled Fred? _________________

Emma/Milvus is RC, that is when I don't leave the handset in the Tramshed. She has a fibreglass hull and a rather high freeboard so is pretty unlikely to come to a sudden end. Meteor, SeaHawk , Snipe and Swallow remained snugly in the Tramshed as they all have possibilities of sudden submersion. Not a problem at APS or Tilford as our waters are too shallow if anything.
Incidentally I am taking advantage of our Sunday Steam Day on September 13th to run some speed trials in the pool on the Saturday (12th) All welcome preferably with boats. Probably 10.00 to 4.00.
I'm calling it "Mr Bowman's Boatday"
Fred
PS More BCLM pictures elsewhere, very similar. |
