WHR Cross Town Rail Link - Urban RailwayThe first trains were run over the Welsh Highland Railway (Caernarfon)'s Cross Town Rail Link today, I went after school to have a look at the return trip and got some video footage.

Don't blame the driver for the hideous noise the engine is making, my dad is driving it!!! The WHR have a track record of breaking FfR locos when they go over there.
More info see these:

Interesting SB, the loco does sound in need of a service or something, unusual to see a loco running through town next to raods and the like, is this going to be a regular thing? Whats the history behind this?

This is a Ffestiniog Railway loco that went on it's holidays to the Welsh Highland Railway, they have a back track or breaking FR locos and they did it with this one, something to do with the electronic control panel apparently.
When fully open (probably 2010) during the high summer this connection will be used around 6 times a day.
This is the section of railway my father has project managed for the past 2 1/2 years, the orignal railway used to take a similar route through the town but the deviation in the reconstruction avoids even more tracks being in the road.
I got it on YouTube within 3 hours of the event!

A word of warning Mike - if you don't know the 'history' and you haven't got hours and hours to spare - don't ask. It's a minefield. I've volunteered on the WHR as a driver an many other things since 1981 and shared all the highs and lows in the fight to reinstate this line. I should be over the moon seeing this footage instead it just makes me cringe at the meglamania the FR manages to nurture in it's breast.
Enough now!

I'm with you on this one Stephen. I was a member of the Welsh Highland Railway (1964) Society during the early 1990s. Sadly only got to Porthmadoc on a couple of occasions though.
I well remember when the Ffestiniog Railway, after attempting to obstruct the rebuilding of the WHR, set up a rival Society and tried to take us over. Not happy times.
Mike, a bit more info here http://www2.whr.co.uk/en/about/which#

That does look odd going through the streets!! It could have filled up at the Shell Service Station

That's a thought - maybe the FR are planning a take over of Shell next!

When the Ffestiniog was first revived the old rails were still there as they led to slate quays, etc, it ran even closer to the petrol station, the story goes that as the Simplex they were using was petrol they saved on shoe leather and drove it up to the petrol station!

I went to watch K1 the world's first Garratt return to the WHR after a short stint at the FR for it to finally get painted properly, now ready for its birthday party, the big 100, same age as my Great Grandmother!
