Tandy was a subsidiary of Radio Shack, but they pulled out of the UK (and of continental Europe) because they stopped being profitable. Shame really, I used to mooch around for hours in the early 'eighties when I was a slightly nerdy kid - I co-owned a TRS-80 computer with a friend. I also bought my first ever audio mixer ( 3 mic preamps! Woohoo!) there, so I guess I can blame them for the rest of my life
Maplin's kind of taken over, but they don't have the same charm. The quality of a Maplin store all depends on the staff....we have two here in Cardiff, the small one is brilliant but the large one is woeful.

Low voltage LED'sYou can't
LED's are LED's and run at about 1.8 volts.
You need to decide how many you want and obtain a d.c. voltage supply to match, e.g. 10 LED's needs 18 volts. As you probably won't find an exact match you will need to drop the voltage from a higher value with an in line resistor. Also consider the current required, a single LED will pull about 4 mA.
I suspect the 'dynamo' used on the Mamod Showman's incorporates a resistor matched to it's output and the number of LED's on the model.
If you are thinking of using a mains transformer I can only suggest you consult a qualified electrician.
