The firebox has just been put on the wrong way Stuart!
The rivetted seem on the firebox was a common feature of engines made around 1965-70.

Alright mike,
Both ends of the firebox have rivets all the fireboxes I have seen were folded up from one piece of metal and slot and tabbed at one corner/seam,the rivets dont seem contemporary with most of ther fireboxes. Why has none of this been mentioned in the ad,the base is an obvious respray, not a mark on it.Stew.

They are probably not aware of it or assume informed buyers know already.

hi there, just browsing the forum tonight and came accross this thread. thought i would check the item in question. imagine my surprise when it turned out to be the one i won .
its quite a good engine despite its bodged restoration as it appears that its only the base and firebox has been resprayed. the engine frame is still its hammered finish green. theres a bit of a leak below the whistle. unfortunatley the whistle is siezed into the boiler insert and thats where the leak is, insert to boiler, any suggestions?

I think you got a bargain there Rich, it looks a good SE3
Regarding the whistle you could try putting a blow lamp on it to heat it up
It might just loosen the wistle, not to much heat though or you will loosen the insert
Maybe put some cold water in the boiler first
Do you cave any better pics Rich now you have the engine

Ive observed that when pop rivets wee first introduced this type of firebox joint was common... They went back to the usual pressed joint after a while - the techincal term for this I dont know!
