Variations on a Theme

After the interest in the Moosemans Peggy I thought I would share these pictures with you.
They are all Hobbies/Bowman units and you can see the family resemblance between them all.

Back is a very late Hobbies Tug, left is the Peggy Unit, right a Pioneer Unit

Shows the size difference between the Pioneer and Peggy, Pioneer oiler and baseplate are bigger!

Engine shot showing the Late Pioneer and the Early Peggy

The difference between early and late can be seen clearly in the engine units, the Peggy has the small cylinder and the Pioneer the later larger type. ls there is a difference in the engine mount, the Pioneer is the standard stationary type, although it does have the early short oiler cup.

As I have said before Bowman boats are a minefield when it coms to dates and variations.

Very interesting MF, the two funnel like projections I take it are vents for the boiler heating?

Just that Mike, it is interesting to note that the one remaining on the Peggy unit is Brass and not steel like the rest of the boiler casing, they must have run out of tin plate ones the day it was made.

Interesting stuff there MF, and a nice little restoration project  Very Happy
Did the engine units come without the boat hulls ?
And if you dont mind me asking, where did you get them from.
MFSteam

I have had them for a few years, the Pioneer i think was purchased a a unit only as it came in a home made mahogany hull, I saw it in the back of a car at an Autojumble at Ardingly Seam Rally and chased him to his stall. i have the rest of the Peggy and in the age old tradition of Antiques Road Show it came from a Boot Sale. The only decent steam I have purchased from a boot sale i might add. The Tug came from ebay a few months back

Fantastic engines MF, never seem to get any steam finds at boot sales down here.
I thought for one moment you'd been raiding GD's garage Very Happy
Looks like the peggy has the wormar style pressed brass port face plate.
Trojanhorse2

Brilliant! Thanks for that, that answers a few questions I had about the Peggy plant (size of the cylinder and the angle of the face plate).  Very Happy

Looking at the pics MF it is curious how the drive spigot on the engine on the left is still included . . .

Im quite fascinated by the look of these units, how big is the boiler? adn how long do these steam for? More pics wopuld be appreciated!!

That is the only "Good" thing I have got from  boot sale, I have seen a number of Mamod Rollers and Traction engines and also a couple of stationeries but nothing to really get you going.

Mike you might be surprised about the size of the boiler in these units, they are very small compared to the size of the shroud a bit like the cylinder cover on the M135.  Run time is the same as the smaller stationary bowmans
about 15mins as the burner is the same.

Has the boiler end cap on the pioneer been removed MF
Only the steam pipe looks to be bent double

I'm not into advertising or boasting about what I have and have not got so it is unlikely that I will post a picture of everything. I like to post pics of my engines when I think others will find it interesting or cause discussion (as with my new build engines).

As for the steam pipe it is not bent double as it looks and it is a runner. Certainly it has a tighter radius than the Peggy but it must be a bit of an optical illusion as it does appear to be bent double

Fascinating stuff MF thanks for posting the pictures.
