Tornado at YorkHad a day in York last weekend, persuaded the better half to accompany me for a quick stop at the NRM (via the 'Brief Encounter' resturant). What should I find on the Great Hall turntable but Tornado - fresh from her southern adventures! She was named by Prince Charles at a ceremony at the NRM the previous Thursday. No camera with me, only the phone, but I thought you all might like to see her anyway...
...and by way of a contrast, in the works...
Note the corridor through the tender allowing non-stop crew changes!
Can't wait to see Scotsman & Tornado side-by-side, in steam!

I serve
The meaning of Ich Dien is "I serve" in German

Visit to York always entail a visit to the NRM!

The 'decoration' on the smokebox is the Prince of Wales' coat of arms, often known as the 'Prince of Wales Feathers'. Charles named the loco the previous Thursday so I assume the decoration was in his honour.

Stephen, what did you think of the paint job on Tornado?
I was expecting a beautifully flat base colour with crisp lining. What it has is a hand painted finish, you can see the brush marks on the smokebox.
Is that how they were back in the day and was I expecting to much.

The paint job looks good, although I have only seen it in pictures. I dare say the huge nameplates taking over the smoke deflectors spoils the look
If you want to see major brush marks you should see the saddle tank on 'Wendy'

I thought that about the name plates too
Minor details on an otherwise impressive piece of engineering

I'll admit that I didn't examine it in detail - I was surprised to see it there and a bit pushed for time (although she was being very patient, and I'm not refering to the loco!). It looked pretty good to me though.
All the refurbs we've carried out on th WHR at Port have been hand painted and the finish is very much down to the individual and the time available. If you say to some guys "it's got to be done by tomorrow", it will be, but you'll see the brushwork. On the other hand tell 'em they've got 'till next season and it'll look like a mirror!
