The STIA2008 PoolWell it didn't float my boat, that was in the Refreshment Room in a glass case like a Railway Sandwich, but it did manage to float a number of others. Bearing in mind that the whole thing was "designed" and built on Saturday using whatever we could scrounge from the Site Railway and we were still filling it at midday on Sunday I think it went very well.
And it gave Bob Fleming a task well within his capabilities!

A few shots of the action

Sadly it all had to end sometime
We are hoping to set up again, perhaps with the Mark2 version on our April Steam Day, Sunday 6th April and possibly for the Urban Rally also (28th 29th June) but the authorities haven't seen the water meter yet [/img]
Come along!

The pool was a huge success Fred, I only wish my Snipe had performed better on the day. The hairline crack in the boiler is now sorted by the way, courtesy of Odilon.

Tell us about the crack. I had a similar experience twelve months ago with an SE4 and it's still awaiting surgery. I'm planning to silver solder it in the hope that the solder will wick its way into the crack but things are complicated by the fact that dropping the cracked boiler end on the garage floor detatched a segment

So you hold other STIA like events at Abbey Pumping Station?

Well Yes and No. There is nothing like an STIA, has a soft and wavy...... no no no . We do run a series of special events, railway days and Kids events which are detailed in our full colour leaflet obtainable at all good APS sales desks. There is a condensed version in the STIA2008 Programme (a free copy to all STIA2008 exhibitors and about 400 paying visitors). We often have steam toys at our special events , that is, after all , how STIA started. I must write out the story of how it all began one day for you all, my children.
As well as these public events we also have a more private event, a bring an engine or two and steam it event every November called Mr Bowman's Birthday. There are details and dates on the STIA website. What, you don't know about the STIA website! Shame on you. www.fcrammond.clara.net
Meanwhile, having forked out forty five quid on a big blue groundsheet we are trying to find ways of using it before the meeces gnaw holes in it. One possibility is to set it up for the April Steam Day and I am at present trying hard to stop the organiser from booking in a crowd of Radio Controlled Model Boat enthusiasts. I feel Live Steam Toy Boats would be much more civilised and my fleet is rather tired of sitting in the refreshment room under a perspex cover like so many Railway Sandwiches. What we want is Meths, fire , steam and a few more loke minded boat owners. What have you got??

James,
Er No.
April will be, as desribed in the leaflet "Displays of Model Engineering will sit alongside historic machines and much much more"
We will be running one of the beam engines and many of the other stuff. Roger is hoping to run his Gauge 1 tinplate in the Big Shed and i should be operating steamboats on the pool together with anyone else who turns up. Do PM me if you can bring something. Incidentally the highspot of the pool at STIA was a pop-pop Titanic Upside down!!!!!! Talk about nature imitating art..

If it's like a model engineering show i have a large collection of Stuarts and other engines like that.
I got 2 steamboats aswell.

PM me with an address and I'll get you an application form. The event is being organised by Roger Caunt, LMTA chairman, who is presenting his G1 Marklin tinplate railway in the big shed (and would also appreciate some support). I am hoping to run steamboats on the pool. Your presence would be much appreciated.

Fred, John's boiler had suffered a rather nasty spot of zinc depletion which led to a fatigue crack in the front endcap. I tried to glom it over with solder, but every time I patched one leak another one would spring up. In the end I popped the endcap and cut a brass disc to fit inside, soldered that in with high temp solder, then soldered the cap back on - hey presto. The boiler is about 1/16" longer, and has a silver patch on the front to hide the crack, but should be good for another 40 years.
That endcap would not have withstood silver soldering - I think it probably would have disintegrated, it was VERY thin and brittle.

Thanks go to Doctor Moose (sounds like a cartoon on children's TV ) who has sorted it out for me. Next time hope to have the Snipe in full cry.

It should see me out then ...... I can see it now -
Good News - A telegram from the Queen
Bad News - The Snipe's boiler is leaking again.
