The C14 ProjectI hope you don't mind me putting a 00 subject here
I bought an old Hornby 0-4-0 from my local Model Shop (www.trainsandboatsandplanes.com) yesterday, and have found inspiration to do it up. This is the Hornby engine:
and it runs well. Having seen it being tested in the shop. It is loosely based on a Dugald Drummond LSWR C14/S14, so I am going to do it up as a C14. Two C14's were based at Eastleigh, one being used in Southampton Docks whilst the other was a standby at Eastleigh (you can tell I like research can't you?!) So I'm doing mine as No. 30589, which is slightly different to the two other C14's. It has a chimney from an Adams B4, and was missing it's toolbox when the picture below was taken:
(Taken from 'Southern Steam in Retrospect' by Eric Sawford. ISBN 978-0-7509-4627-8)
Mine will be just as it is in the picture, although without the Walschaerts valve gear unless I can fit it in somehow I'm going to take the body off after this post and file down the nameplate brackets so I can get an even side on the tanks. Then it is going to be given three coats of Tamiya PS5 Black. Pictures as the project progresses!
P.S. Which Hornby model is it? I have seen a fair few but have never found out what their range name was
All the Best,
Si

Coal bunker rails and coal have been removed, as the coal rails were only one bar high, needs to be 3. (Keen eye for detail!). I will put a sheet of brass below the level of the cab, and put real coal in the bunker and make up the 3 bar rail arrangement from brass strip and sheet. As you can see I slipped with the Dremel, so the cab will receive some attention with car filler...
The handrails have been filed off of the smokebox as they were lower than that fitted to 30589. I might have to file off the dummy clack valves to file off the handrails on the boiler itself. The dummys then being replaced by proper brass ones and copper wire.
The steps have been cut off and moved right to the front by the buffer beam. These were used by the shunters at Southampton Dock to aid their movements and generally speed up operations by travelling with the engine.
The front of the cab will be plated over with brass sheet, then drilled out so the spectacle plates are round rather than the shape they are now.
Hopefully by Wednesday 30589 will be receiving her first coat of paint 8)

The one in the foreground looks familiar I have the one to the left as well, once I've finished this little project I'll be sure to put up some pictures of my OO stock Great little runners are the Hornby 0-4-0's, possibly the successor to Polly, Nellie and Connie

Can't wait to see the finished product. Are you putting outside cylinders on it along with the connecting rods? I managed to bugger up my cheapo Dremel the other day while axing a section of mamod track. But I have a heavy duty one on order.

I might put on the cylinders and valve gear at a later date Will.
I have bought these for the handrails:
They are incredibly small, and for comparison here's one next to my little finger!:
After my accident with the dremel, I also bought some filler:
I will probably drill the holes for the stanchions tonight if I can find a small enough drill bit. I might be having the day off tomorrow, weather permitting so the body will be reconstructed then...
