The Black Eagle

I recently bought a rather rough Bowman (Dereham ) Eagle and , it having been mentioned in some correspondence my Canadian contact wrote "so you bought the black Eagle then". It's not actually black, it's just that the paint has flaked badly and a previous owner has given it a once over in either thick brown varnish or creosote.
The result is as below

The boat is basically sound, I've not checked for leaks yet, but everything but the burner appears to be present. The hull has been badly scarred, perhaps in removing paint, but the hull paint is in a very bad state.

Normally I am not keen on restoring engines back to toyshop condition but in this case I think I am going to have to strip it right back to the wood, fill and repaint. I am rather surprised by the thickness of the original paint. It reminds me of some flakes I saw from a pre-war Rolls Royce and those cars had many individual coats all rubbed down between coats.. I cannot imagine Bowman/Hobbies putting more than a couple of coats on and non drip mixes did not exist then. Has anyone any idea how the thickness was achieved?

Re: The Black Eagle

That eagle has had a rough life, but looks to be all complete
Bring it back to life Fred

Perhaps a previous owner got the paint tin out
And added a few coats
Where these boats hand painted or sprayed ?

The underside has a wonderful colour . . .

If they did build up layers of paint with successive coats, that allI can suggest . . . Rather time consuming though!
