te1a problems

can anybody give me some advice please.
i have tried to steam my engine but it will not go inreverse, it just splutters and it wont turn the fly wheel.
it has had new pipes fitted which was a complete assembly from mamod .so all i had to do was solder it into the boiler
i have threaded wire through the copper pipes to make sure they are all clear and checked the hole in the piston as well .
so now i am, completely stuck to know what to do .
so if anybody knows whats wrong tell me please i will give it a try .
thanks i cant wait to get you good advice

Are you sure one of the pipes is not blocked with solder?

Check that the cylinder is not binding, and that the trunnion bolt/spring is not too tight.

Check lubrication, check that the port faces are not rough - they may need lapping. Check the piston for a smooth snug fit . . .

thanks for your help i have tried most of those items i know the pipes are clear because i could see the wire and where i could not see it i checked the lenth of wire an it fed smoothly so it looks like i will have to check the piston an spring

Can you post some pics

Big D Mike may be right, you say you have threaded wire through the pipes is the wire the same size as the bore of the pipes? If not it could be restricted I push a small drill in by hand after I have solder just to make sure the bore is clear.

i now have cleaned the flat face on the piston houseing with a very fine oil stone i have all so checked the pipes again for blockages i know if i put it on an air line it will run fine but not under steam lets wait and see

Let us know how you do!
Manxman

This may sound silly but have you checked the reversing lever. These can sometimes get bent or shifted in position and make bad contact. Try tightening the spring and carefully moving it around. See if that helps. Very Happy

thanks for that i keep looking at the lever do you know if it is compatable withe the new mamod piston holder that is why i am sure about the pipes because i only soldered to the tank only
Manxman

It's difficult without pics but I do know of other people who have struggled with forward or reverse only to discover that the lever has become worn / bent and so not making a brill contact.

Good luck with it. Very Happy

i think i will order a new one and rule it out

big d

i have fixed it at last have a guess what it was nobody mentioned it
steamyjim

Was it a bent pinion?
big d

no non compatable parts

What parts Shocked
big d

well i fitted a new piston mounting bracket and put the old piston and lever on it and it would not run so i put a new piston and lever on and it run like a dream so old parts and new parts dont seem to marry together did any body know this ?

Sounds about right, there are subtle variations in parts.

has any body else had this problem

I have not bigd I know of some members who have had machines which were temperamental with similar problems of poor steaming.
