Stuart Star - fits what?I have recently acquired a Stuart Star engine c1935. I understand these were used in racing hydroplanes. Any idea where I can get plans for something suitable for this engine (or preferably a kit)? Are any of the Hobbies/Bowman ones suitable? Any ideas please anyone? Thanks!

Hi there Bobby -
welcome to Freesteam, I have seen racing hydroplanes using flash steam engines, but they were more or less custom made. Have you tried Googling Flash steam Hydroplanes or similar?
Do you have any images of the engine?
Regards
Mike

The problem with engines like that is that they run so fast they use a huge amount of steam very quickly. I dont think there are any commercial flash steam boilers that are sutiable available. Aulthough a few of the boiler making companys may be able to make you one.

Hi
A stuart Star is of similar size and design to the Sun and smaller than the Sirius. If i remember correctly it is of aluminium construction and quite unusual. It would run quite happily on low pressure steam from a standard type boiler, although it would have to be considerably bigger than a Bowman one. The star is indeed a high speed boat engine, Model Engineer Magazines of the period will have some plans for Hydroplanes in, you might be able to get them from ebay. there are a number of the old MAP plans available, who sells them has left my head at the moment.

Thanks – you chaps are a mine of info. The Star is indeed an aluminium-crankcased enclosed twin cylinder with bevel-gear driven valve gear. The actual engine casing is 2.75 in long. The one I have dates from around 1935, when it was listed in Stuart’s catalogue as 1 pound and 10 shillings (big bucks in those days). I have not tried running mine yet, but it turns over smoothly with a good compression feel.
And here it is:
Thnaks for your input!
