Stuart S50Hi, this will seem like a silly question, but should I be able to blow through the inlet pipe and out the exhaust with the valve in any position. The engine will just about run on lung power, but I haven't tried it on air yet, or steam, as I dont have a boiler.
Thanks
Franco.

I would imagine there should be some resistence Frank
I've tried blowing through my Stuart's and its near impossable
I would connect it to a air supply and see what happens
Post some pics of your S50 Frank if you get the chance

Franco - if you get airflow from inlet to exhaust without any movement of the piston there's something wrong! I don't know about Stuarts but I do know steam engines and that definately ain't right.

Stuart S50Here they are, I tried disconnecting the valve rod, the valve seems very loose and rough, poor machining or worn?,...either way it seems they're destined for the mantlepiece for a while!

All fine looking machines, I particularly like the look of the last engine - German obviously, but is Fleischmann, Bing or Marklin? As you can tell german machinery is not my thing!

Now that is a big lump
We will need a video of that one running now Frank

It's a Doll guy's, from the late twenties as far as I know...I've just started to work on it.

That's absolutely terrific - an engine to be very proud of indeed!
Of course it's a Doll - I think it could be model 364/3, have a look at this link to the Doll on-line catalogue page: http://www.ca-si.net/fleischmann/D-Dampfmaschinen/D-Hauptgruppen/D-Liegend/D-364/D-364_3/d-364_3.html.
The only difference appears to be the position of the steamdome and type of safety valve. Do you have a better photo of the burner by any chance?

The flywheel diameter at 12.5cm makes it a 364/2 Stephen, the 364/3 had I think a 14cm flywheel.. Sorry that's the only pic of the engine I have at the moment.

Here we have a man who knows his stuff!
It's a beautiful engine Franco, I'm jealous as hell!
Please take a video sometime, yes?

The only reason I know is from studying that Doll/Fleischmann site at length Stephen!, and I will post a vid as soon as it's reassembled

The more I look at it, the more it appeals! The shape of the engineplate pedestal is most elegant and the handrail detail is lovely. Having the feed pump will make it very interesting to run - all you have to do it keep it well lubed and top up the meths - terrific!

I got it on German ebay for I think 230euro, the sight glass had been , and the holes patched....and of course that wonderful paint job!.
Part of the safety valve is missing and also the filling plug. There is a s.v and a plug on German ebay at the moment..the s.v has hit 100euro, and the plug is at 50euro!....I believe I'll be making those parts!!

I've no spare Doll s/v's but if you need any measurements or even if you want to borrow one to make a replica, you're very welcome - just ask.
The Fleischmann s/v is the same by the way.

Thanks Stephen, that's very decent of you, however all I need to make is the threaded post that the arm pivots on, the arm, and the weight and those I can copy from my Fleischmann..Thanks again!

Oops - sorry it's a weighted arm s/v not a screwed insert, stupid of me (too much wine with Sunday dinner!).
Forest Classics do them - I bought one for a Bing with a 5mm insert, non-standard but it looks good! They have various sizes.

Have a glass for me ...I'll give them a try.
Thanks
