The first steam engine to be built in Britain for nearly half a century has gone on show at the National Railway Museum.
Tornado cost £3 million and was funded entirely from donations.
The hand-painting is just incredible, a lot of skill and a steady hand is required for those 'dagger' brushes.

That is amazing! Realy realy beautiful!
I MUST see that! It's nice to know Britains great Industrial past isn't completely dead. It will bring a tear to my eye

I suspect it is just the tyres that are South African.
MFSteam
Did I mention I've got a ticket for its first London Departure?

Ah okay but still we should be able to do it all in this country. After all the steam locomotive is a British invention and our history as locomotive builders is second to none. As Fred Dibnah said "Steam like the sea should run in the blood of every Britain" Unfortunatley it doesn't any more

I'm glad it has been painted in LNER green as the grey doesn't look good at all.
A real beauty
MTA
I rather liked the grey, made it look very modern 8) Especially when it had the National Express logos on the tender sides
Minor1PJG
Aah well, each to their own!!
I think LNER green will suit it very well
steamyjim
I liked the grey...but prefer the green
MTA
I'll prefer it more in the proposed BR Blue

spug103
just picked up on this thread,
i really love the patriotism at the begining,
im not sure if you knew though that the boiler was made in germany,
its sad but true,
the company i work for was offered the job but we couldnt fit it in in time so they went abroad.
cheers

What company is that Ben?
MFSteam
Pridhams?
I thought it went to Germany for a number of reasons, price, because it was all welded and also time scale. Its is a shame it wasn't done here but not the end of the world. T^ell us more about your work?
spug103
Yes, pridhams, you know your steam!
well the story i was told was that we had been offered the job but due to other work that was already in progress and other work already booked in they couldnt wait that long, i wasnt told of any problems with price, and weve done plenty of welded boilers aswell as the riveted ones, we have our own coded welder, infact we are i believe the only firm in england that has an in house welder also coded for copper boilers, the other firms that advertise this service either sub it out to us or, get another guy, i think his name is barry england, not sure, any way i'll post a few pics from work if you like.
cheers

You made some siphons for Blackmoor Vale a couple of years ago
Lots of pics please, as many as you like.
spug103
blackmore vale, that'll be one i missed, i left for a while and came back but i would imagine it is probibally a bullied design..... westcountry?
looks very much like this:
this is the taw valley, currently being thouroghly disected!
ive also worked on two other bullied engines the clan line (merchant navy) and the braunton (westcountry),
perhaps i should start a new thread for pics?
Spokesmann
Great stuff Ben, I find this sort of thread gives an easily understandible edge to things!
Start a dedicated thread by all means!
MFSteam
Keep em coming, they are great. Please share as many as you like and as much technical stuff as you can. You dont often get to see inside boilers. Any pics of the New sorry I mean rebuilt A3 boiler?
