Sometime in 1954I like this photo as it shows the evelution of the flat base SE2 in 1954
To the all new raised base SE2 also in 1954
There where a few minor changes, I.E. a bigger box
Anyway I'll show a few pics of the differences
Same designed box, but bigger
Boxes with engines
A noticable difference, the whistles

The red painted water level plugs remained the same

Diffferent coloured boiler bands

The piston shaft

Mamod embosed red thing

Oil holes

All in all minor differences, but still interesting to see them side by side

Very interesting variations and detailing. The painted crank seems to be a curiosity, I have seen a few like this in red, but not a common occurance. I cannot think why they would do it. Perhaps they had one employee who like to mark his or her engines differently or they were some sort of production test or marker. The raised base SE2 is a later one I d guess since the it had the eyelet type conrod end (My terminology by the way!)
The raised base also seem to have no decal or is it stuck on the other side like mine?, Mike?
There seem to be a number of variations on the arm type whistles, some with insulation, some with red painted handles, some with longer arms than others!...
Earlier boiler bands tend to be copper coloured, I think its some sort of plating.
Regulator handles on the SE2 got gradually shorter towards the 1960s, although these are both the longer variety.
On the flatbase its unusual to see a plain crank, at this time Mamod were using a stamped (debossed) Mamod mark on them or a raised (embossed) Mamod logo, brass plating is very much of the time though.
These were the top of the range Mamod stationaries in their day, the SE2 being in production from 1937-67 (excluding the war years). Both attractive and very collectable engines today.

Thx very much for the feedback guys
The flatbase SE2 below might be somewhat of a rarety
We know Mr Malins introduced the mazak flywheel in 1953
And we know the raised base was introduced in 1954
Thus giving the SE2 below a possable production run of only one year
(Give or take a week or too)

A very interesting thread Mike! The engines are just beautiful, the 53 SE2 especially.
I am on the lookout for a 53 SE2 to go with my MM2 and SE1 of the same era...

I don't think I have a picture of it at the moment. Shall try and grab one ASAP. I had it running for the first time in my possesion today, ran for about 20 minutes

Just remembered that Mike tooks pictures of the MM2 and SE1 at Exeter on the weekend. I hope he doesn't mind me posting the pictures up (if you do, remove them).
Anyway...
The MM2 with blue decal and mazak flywheel from 1953...
And an SE2 with blue decal and mazak flywheel again from 1953...

From around this period lineshafts began to get a raised base too, as well as the familiar red oval decal. From my own experience a raised base lineshaft with this decal seems to hard to get hold of. Like the FB ones. Just my observation and not a stated fact.
