Slide valves

I bought this engine a few weeks back, as it seemed to have a bit of character. It has a few issues that need fixing, bit of soldering etc.
This is my first slide valve engine & would appreciate any tips in optimising the valve set up?

That looks an interesting engine Mike
Have you fired it yet

I had to araldite the flywheel onto the main shaft & solder the con rod on the slide valve (please excuse my lack of engineering skills). Tried it on air , but can't seem to get the timing quite right. Question

you need to pull the slide valve out and have a look at it, is it a piston valve like a wilesco? f so the timing is created by the undercuts on the piston valve and by the position on the crank.

The slide valve is made from an old std mamod piston on & cylinder, with cuts on the piston. I'll have to get some better pics in the week.  I think it's going to be a trail & error adventure, it appears to be the exhaust stroke that's not qiute right. As it's scratch built it may never have worked properly, the cam offset & valve piston grooves may not be in harmony.
