Six Lumps of WoodA Bowman Type hull should be easy to make.
Its only six pieces of wood.
If only I had known.
The following is the current state of play.
Dont worry I wont bore everyone with the failures.
Too many to show.
The main instument of torture and cut fingers.
A small bandsaw purchased from a well known supermarket.
The first successfull test cut.
There were several failures becouse of the blade wandering around everywhere except the line I wanted.
I should admit that the timber is thicker than the stated maximum size for the saw.

Ohhh I like this, keep us posted Phantom

I shall watch this with interest. The way they are made circumvents the tricky process of gluing and pinning in the case of the Arrow design. Looking forward to the next installment.

Six Lumps of WoodSorry for the break.
I was told I had to be sociable.
Putting the bits of wood together with Eagle for comparison.
Finaly. the six pieces of wood looking like a boat.
I couldnt open up the band saw any further, so have used ply wood for the base.
The hull isnt finished, but I couldnt resist seeing what the engine and boiler looked like with the hull.

That is looking stunning! When the top edges are chamfered it'll look even better.
I always get told being on the net is unsociable!

Great stuff Phantom
I have the same hull under construction, mines taken months to get that far
I've still not got the plywood for the bottom yet.
I've been keeping my eye out for a cheap bandsaw via ebay, looking for something a little bigger than yours.
I cut mine with a jigsaw & cleaned it up with a belt sander, initially i was making a former for steam bending but that's another story.
If a 350 watt version cuts the softwood blanks ok, then i'll look for one of similar size as it be much cheaper?

Brilliant !! I'm going to have to try this, (all I need is a bandsaw )
|
Phantom
|
Six Lumps of WoodI guess I shouldnt complain about the bandsaw.
It was very cheep and has managed to cut timber thicker than it is suposed too.
The cuts are my fault really, I shoulnt put my fingers in front of the blade.

Both exceedingly sturdy looking machines!

Six Lumps of WoodExcellent latteral thinking to use a jig saw, Newts.
Why didnt I think of that.
I have tried steaming and soaking timber in a jig, the results were inconsistent.
O.K. They were crap.
Managed to get home from site early today so have cleaned it up and made the seventh and final wooden part.

Ere, slow down a bit i'll never keep up now
That is coming along very nicely
I filled the pin holes ready for sanding a couple of months ago & that's it so far.
The main problem with cutting 70mm of timber with a jigsaw, is that the cut wobbles in & out more than a fiddlers elbow.
I'll certainly concur with the steam bending, very problematic
If cutting from the 'solid' was good enough for GBJ then it's good enough for me

Six Lumps of WoodI have still a long way to go making the rudder ect before I can fit the engine and boiler.
Hopefully I can do them whilst the glue fully hardens.
I have done a couple of drawings of Swallow and Snipes hulls.
They are traditional pencil and paper, plan and side elevation.
I have no way of copying them.
They are A2 in size 3 pages in total scale 1:1
Is there anyone who can do this, so that members can have copies to make there own boats.?

Six Lumps of WoodUnfortunately or fortunately, depending on your point of view.
I live in a small town and we dont have a copy shop.

Six Lumps of WoodThis weekend the weather round here has been a bit of a washout.
This has alowed me to hide in the workshop though.
Quite a bit of progress has been made.
Some of the parts that I hadnt made till now.
The hull with mounting studs fitted along with rudder and prop assembley.
I decided to use apoxy resin to bond these parts to the hull.
The prop guard is a thicker guage of brass rod.
I have done this becouse they seem to be easily damaged.
Swallow and Eagles had to be silver soldered becouse they had snapped.
Getting the parts ready for a final dry assembley.
The pipework joining the engine to the boiler is also finished now.
A few shots of it being assembled, to check everything lines up as it should.
Everything seems to line up properly and the gears seem to be free to turn the prop.
I have to admit to being very chuffed with everything so far.

You have too much talent Phantom, how did you bend the cowl it looks great
|
Phantom

Six Lumps of WoodI bent the cowel gently over a piece of copper pipe.
I still mess up with sheet metal work.
Look at the creases in the spray hood.

I used an old cycle frame to form mine spray hoods, I rather like sheet metal work....

Six Lumps of WoodI enjoy Doing sheet metal work.
Sometimes though it doesnt work out as good as I would like.
I keep bashing away though, in the hope it will.

Six Lumps of WoodThis weeks progress.
Started off by protecting the hull with several layers of thined poly' varnish and a littlle filler to smooth things over a bit.
|

|
Six Lumps of WoodAs the week progressed I started to apply the paint.
At first I just did any areas I thought might give me problems.

Six Lumps of WoodThe final coats of paint being applied.

Six Lumps of WoodFinally I took the masking tape off to reveal the hull painted, for the first time.

Six Lumps of WoodThe latest pics.
Just a few tidying up jobs to do after this, as well as giving the paint chance to harden off.
Hope you like it?

Six Lumps of WoodThanks guys for your kind words and praise.
If it wasnt for encouragement and help from you I wouldnt have even started.
Everybody should be pleased with the result.
I am.
|
Phantom

Six Lumps of WoodThe paint used was....
Wliko multi surface enamel (Antique White Gloss)
Plasti-Kote Fast Dry Enamel
(Gloss Black 101s)
(Garden Green 104s)
(Clear 119s)
The varnish used to seal the timber was Rustins Poly mixed 50/50 with white spirit.
P.S. Try not to paint out doors in the rain it spoils the finish.

Phantom what sort of masking tape or sticky film di you use for the waterline? Ordinary stuff or very low tack?
|
Phantom
|
Six Lumps of WoodIt was "duck" low tack tape.
The rest was masked off with paper.
I also used the old trick of sticking it down on a dusty surface a couple of times, before sticking it down on the boat.
Hope that helps.
