SEL Burner

I tried out my "Wick Collars" that I made the other day with some dissapointment  Sad  it would seem that everything starts out fine once lit, yet after a minute or so, things get a little fruity and a raging fireball progresses  Shocked . I have since "ported" the collars with a 1/16" dia drill, each one 3 times @ 120 degrees around the exposed edge and I'm considering using a smaller diameter wick for my next attempt.

Any suggestions welcome.

You have found the problem with SEl lamps  - the wick was the breather vent too.

So, with the collars vented and a smaller wick we should be ok as long as there is adequate ventilation ?

Possibly.

I reckon it's worth persuing. It worked fine when I used a couple of plumbing sleeves when I first ran the engine. They sat in the burner and happily gave a satisfactory performance.

My two options are firstly, look for another burner or two original collars. Secondly try as I previously suggested with a thinner wick or make two fresh collars (Theres 5" of brass round bar left)  Laughing  Laughing  Laughing

These things only become a problem upon the exhaustion of all options and ideas  Wink  Wink

Use a different burner for running the engine?

The SEL major runs really well with the little burner (square brass replacement type 12mm x 12mm x 60mm) from my MM1, it doesn't thrash itself with this burner but runs really well and quite timely if you know what I mean

I will get a satisfactory result with the original SEL burner though, it's just a matter trials and time (no rush).

I've got a couple of SEL wick tubes spare if you want them JJ (FOC). Send me a PM with your address and I'll get them to you.

The problem I've had is fitting new wick into the very small central hole without blocking the vents! I'm considering fitting a vented filler plug and enlarging the hole in the wick tubes.

Your'e a Gentleman and a scholar, many thanks indeed for this kind gesture. You have a PM my friend.

I wrap cotton as tight as I can around the first half inch or so of wick therefore reducing its diameter dramatically then remove it when the wick is through.

Good tip - thanks!
