things to do are, take apart clean all parts, remove the blue paint from the base and make a fake whistle to cover the screw as do not want to remove it

Plenty to do there, worth it though!

Interesting pistons - not ones I've seen before. They look like Latimer's design and a lot stronger than the originals!
SEL's (and Merit) were made 1946-1965. I believe the full-base versions were the earlier ones (I may stand corrected), so yours would be '46-55 ish.
Others will, I hope, add their comments!

They caught my eye too, I have seen something similar, although I could not say if they are original and an alternative design....

I think I have a 'blank' SEL SV - the solid type if thats any use, plugs the hole!

All the SEL's had the same S/V - even the Minor.
I know a man who's got the right size die!

Some SEL's (only the Minor I think) had a dummy SV. It looked like the standard item but was solid and as such had no moving parts. I've no idea why they did this or even when they made them.

That's weird - are you sure what you saw was factory fitted and not something a previous owner made up to plug the hole?
I can't imagine why the makers would go to all the trouble of fitting a dummy when they had a standard unit already!
On the other hand, if Mike's got one as well... or is it the same one?
