SEL 1550

arrived today and in not to bad a shape. missing burner, whistle replaced with a screw which i am going to leave as thread is prob knackered and its badge from the base is also missing. anyone able to to me roughly what sort of age this is?

willbur

things to do are, take apart clean all parts, remove the blue paint from the base and make a fake whistle to cover the screw as do not want to remove it
Spokesmann

Plenty to do there, worth it though!

Interesting pistons - not ones I've seen before. They look like Latimer's design and a lot stronger than the originals!

SEL's (and Merit) were made 1946-1965. I believe the full-base versions were the earlier ones (I may stand corrected), so yours would be '46-55 ish.

Others will, I hope, add their comments!

They caught my eye too, I have seen something similar, although I could not say if they are original and an alternative design....

yay all now finished restoration can be found on my website.
still needed are the burner and whistle both i am told are a bugger to find Very Happy

I think I have a 'blank' SEL SV - the solid type if thats any use, plugs the hole!

Ill get a pic. The smallest SEL didn't have an SV I beleive.
willbur

whistle thread is a lot small than the sv also just just tried the screw and it wont budge so think will leave it in there
MFSteam

The whistle thread is 3 BA

All the SEL's had the same S/V - even the Minor.

I know a man who's got the right size die!
MFSteam

Some SEL's (only the Minor I think) had a dummy SV. It looked like the standard item but was solid and as such had no moving parts. I've no idea why they did this or even when they made them.
silverfoxsteam

That's weird - are you sure what you saw was factory fitted and not something a previous owner made up to plug the hole?

I can't imagine why the makers would go to all the trouble of fitting a dummy when they had a standard unit already!

On the other hand, if Mike's got one as well... or is it the same one?
MFSteam

I'll grab a pic tomorrow.
