RE: meths trayhi all,
could anybody explain to me about the meths tray. i got one today with an se2.
it has some form of packing/ wadding inside it with a gauze over it. i filled it with meths and lit it. after about 5mins it started burning with a yellow flame and throwing out alot of black smoke, which would explain why my new aquisition is covered in soot.
what should be in the tray and where can i get some? thanks

the lamp is a vapourising type, used in various forms on Mamod engines up to c1977. The wadding is just cotton wool, the gauze protects the wadding from burning by allowing the flame to only burn above the the perforations in the gauze. It sounds like the wadding in yours is wet or contaminated. Replace the wadding by repacking it with clean new cotton wool and it should perform much better. The size and shape of the vap lamps varied from engine to engine with Mamod and also in design, the basic principle of pan, wadding and gauze applies to all types. Let us know if you have some success Rich!

hi there, thanks for that it works a treat, the hardest part was bending the tabs back to get the old wadding out. no more sooty smoke just a clean blue flame. once again many thanks.
