Re Engineering a Crane EngineI built my Crane engine out of a TEWK1 yonks ago, when I was a teenager in fact, the jib was wobbly and too short, it was a manual lift, and had a cardboard canopy.
I have decided now I have better skills I am going to re engineer it.
So far I have made a solid jib mount and tow jaw on the perch bracket, and I have fitted a proper Mamod derived 2/3 canopy.
I've also done a bit of weighing up with mecanno as to how I am going to drive the jib winch, and I think I now have a plan.
Where I am so far, the canopy will get a repaint, as will the whole machine when it is finished.

Look forward to seeing that!

Here is the mocked up powered winch, got to make a few collars, trim up the meccano, and do some triangulation to stiffen things up but the idea works. Is super low geared so should work well.

Interesting Hedd, anything with Meccano in it and Im fascinated. That work drive should provide a very good reduction. I look forward to more images of the mechanism.

are you going to have reverse/forward with gearing or just the engine forward/reserve ?

Was far too low geared so I've swapped the 57 tooth gear for a 22 one, now lots better.
The engine will provide forward and reverse, though it has no clutch, I'll just take off the gear on the back
Jib this afternoon.

Pretty much done now bar the paint, just a few rough edges to sort out and tidy up. Perhaps some rubbers also.
The colpours will stay pretty much 'as Is' I think, need to black up the crane gear, the blue and red will stay, perhaps a black flywheel. We shall see.
So what so you guys think?
This is what I started with 15 years ago.
Building a fergus next.

A great improvement well done but what is with the brass rods?? could you not find meccano axles and couplings

This is a far better job, you'll notice that most of the meccano is now far from standard. I had to get the tin snips and file out to make it all fit.

Just what do you mean Meccano far from Standard ???
all of mine is Standard but then my collection is from 1908 through to 1970s with the odd exception of the G scale train set and Crane and 1 space set but then those 3 are made up and that is where they stay
I prefer to work with the Nickel 1908 - 1926 and the Blue/gold 1934 - 1942

Well, the bracket near the crank is now narrower than it should be at one end so as to fit nicely between the boiler and the outside of the firebox.
The worm on the crankshaft now has a 5mm hole in it.
The two plates on the smokebox sides are a custom shape, so as to look right.
And the jib is 4 holes shorter than a standard meccano length, it looked too tall as was.
Its a Mamod crane engine, not a meccano model. Just a toy used for fun purposes. I won't play with it, but with friends like mine (i.e people with full size engines) their kids think it is great fun. I expect it will be more so now its a better job. My daughter is a bit young, but I'll show her how to lift her dollies up with it when she is older.

Here we go, all done, paint and all. Wish my camera phone took even half decent pics, but there you go.
Last mod was to pour half a plumbers solder reel of molten solder into the scuttle as a counterweight.

Looks good Hedd, I like the use of the worm drive on the crane pulley.

Some video would be most excellent - any chance?
