Depending on how hard to shift the paint is, and the surface ie is it rusted/deeply pitted, I find a medium/fine smoothing/emery type form block very useful! As long a the finished surface for painting is stable a few scraps of paint wont harm the new finish. Stripper will remove the old paint completely - depends just how far and how bad the original paint is. Not heard the pine oil one . . . . Smile

Oh, I find a good wipe with white or methylated spirits before the first coat of primer removes all traces of grease too. Smile

Strong pine oil is hard to find in this country, but it does come in pine-scented cleaning products.

Other methods are of course good old-fashioned heat, or mechanical stripping. Spray paint is easily removed by rubbing with meths.

I don't like paint stripper either, but sometimes it's just the most efficient way.

I sometime strip painted metal with the coarse wire wheel on my bench grinder.
It's also sees use in prepping surfaces for soldering.
