One Mo Snipe ...As a very newbie here I wanted to share my just finished Snipe. Now no planning involved- I just put my Bowman Speedboat decal in place( Not Mikes..sorry _ have had this one waiting to get into place...I do notice that yours has a more evenly bold S in Speedboat...
Any way here are a few shots of her- waiting for her first visit to the pond
Next to her sister - The Tug, "Maddy B"
And the "other decal" ....had I known.....
I have a ton of the process but that can be tedious...I did do a few specific mods ( like the leaky / oily nail hole in the exhaust pipe that leaks on the ttransom) I can share another day
Cheers folks

It is a kit boat about 25 yrs old from Modeen ( the power plant is called a "Pemberton"...I made the pilot house out of copper and it will be a single servo RC boat... so there are a few more subtle mods' headed for this little boat I have named after my daughter... Maddy B....

The Snipe is a stunner . . . ., the other one aint too shabby too!
Both very, very nice bits of kit!
Decal on the Snipe is original? They did have a 'rougher' look than mine . . . which needs 'distressing' before final printing!

No Mike- I bought it from another fellow...and I can't call his name...Yours is quite nice ......I have to say you hold your breath when putting on a decal that has come half way round the world!! But the kid in me came back and remembered what I used to do so much 40 years ago..

A super pair of boats Mo, thanks for sharing them with us.

I had the boat for a while befoe I knew what it was...A New In Box kit showed up on US ebay about 3 weeks ago- sold for about $275 USD.. there is a completed one on US ebay now for a BIN price of $465...
To be somewhat true to the boat...My pilot house is lift off and just inserts onto the firebox- so adds a little insulation and wind break but not permanent.
I also will make a matching copper fore deck .....

Oh yeah!! For sure... people on this side of the pond have never even heard of Bowman.... or Mamod for that matter..it great fun to share the culture with them..I have boats to steam in the water!!
If only one day they made a Turbinia model that I could put a small scale steam turbine in...that would be grand.. that hull design is as sexy as it comes...

That hull design echoes much of the classic speedboat designs of the 20's & 30's to a very great effect The plans are still available from Hobbies & would think they are not too difficult to build (a couple of members here have very fine examples of homebuilds ). Currently there isn't a boat in the newts household, but a snipe or similar is bound to dock at some stage

Is this the same as yours Mo?

Thats her!! I have the original instructions and a magazine review done in 1985 on the kit as well( it shows it as the "River Princes".
I just don't have the fore and aft decks with the life ring etc. If you want a copy of the instructions just let me know!!
You have a great collection if that is yours as well as the Meteor!!

Good to see you and your fine boats here, mo. The Snipe looks great. I hadn't seen
your tug before, though. I like it a lot and for me, the copper pilot house really sets it off.
What was your source for the copper sheet?

Its mine, got it from ebay a couple of years back for £70, I didn't know what it was i just liked it.
A copy of the instructions would be great, any chance of a scan of the kit review?

I have a great hardware store that sells all sorts of sheet metals- mild steel, heavy gauge steel, zink , aluminum ( expanded, and perforated as well as copper , bronze mesh to boot!!
They sell it by the pound... I just traced mt pattern with carbon paper and trimmed it out and used some sheet metal duct pliers to bend it into shape.
I opted for the old fashioned tab / slot method to assemble - as it would look more authentic to period..The copper fore wind screen and stubby mast is coming next.

Nice -!! are those Peter Pans? They are very efficient looking with that tight boiler surround.
Remember that short boiler I was wanting from you..? The brief type power plant that yours represent is what I am shooting for with my project boat #1 ( not shown here)_ I have about 8" total to have a boiler and engine occupy as my boats nose is long and narrow..
Thanks for sharing that photo--- I will always keep my eye peeled for a Meteor....and I am on the prowl for a Classic steam launch... but I have given up on England being my area to find one... the size I want seems to be prohibitive to ship in price usually about $90 pounds!!!!!!
I am close on the heels of an old steam tug - about "32 long--
Cheers Ian

Not Peter Pan , that was earlier, boat is a very late tug that uses the miss america steam plant. front right is a pioneer and front left is a peggy. i have hulls for the two plants peggy is original but pioneer is a mahogany home made job.

Cool- that early tug design is what got me heading in the direction of a TUG.. my primitive interpretation is a ode to the early Bowman's, but a working mans Bowman's as opposed to a young lads...

Pardon this landlubber, but I was puzzled looking at Ian's photo. With the boilers so low
to the platform, how does the flame get enough draft? The stacks for the wicks must be
pretty low. Anyone have any pics of these burners?
|
mogogear
|
Chuck - the outer cover is not the boiler.. It is a windscreen / insulator - there is a larger gap under the belly of the boiler than it appears...It does sit lower to the deck than most.. but there is room ...barely
|
oldstuff
|
But, but, but...
I get it, but I don't get it. I see the draft holes in the one in the boat, but the other two?
Guess I'll just have to accept this "cover" story.
Okay, now I see. There's a visible gap where the steam pipe enters the cover on the
one pictured right, front.
Are they prone to popping flame-ups with this low clearance and draft?

I have never used one- I have just glimpsed the fire box opening before..
.MMF--- They were originally a solid fuel tray set up --right?

Chuck one at STiA this year caught fire - he was next to my stand! I have a pic somewhere of a smouldering boiler . . . think it was the lagging!

Owwwww! Smoldering boats or boilers... my biggest fear!!
