Full steam ahead for special train trip

HUNDREDS of people turned back time in northern Lincolnshire at the weekend, recapturing the era when steam locomotives still ruled the rails.
Preserved engine No 70013 Oliver Cromwell whisked 365 passengers on a capital day trip to London, organised for readers of the Scunthorpe and Grimsby Telegraphs and their weekly sister papers the Scunthorpe Target and Life.
But scores more who did not get tickets on Saturday’s train – ranging from pensioners to young fans of Thomas the Tank Engine – filled vantage points at stations, level crossings, bridges and fields across the area to watch, snap and video the extremely rare sight of a steam loco drifting by on Network Rail tracks.

I'm not a big fan of the standards but I'm off to see OC at Folkstone in a couple of weeks on the final ( final Confused ) Harbour trip. Should be good.

Beautiful, elegant machine.

In that last photo from 1960, it appears to be sitting in a deadline.

Was it rescued from the torch?

Made a quick visit to SVR yesterday, poped into the Engine House at Highley which is worth the entrace fee. The visiting engines were attracting lots of interest with every bit of accessible track side between Bridgnorth and Highley packed with spectators. Sir Nigel Gresley looked very impresive with the train made up of Gresley teak coach's.Do have some photo's the lineside one's are Naff the indoor ones a little better.

Well the Golden Arrow has all gone to snot, it was due to leave Victoria which meant I could see it run through Godstone and still beat it to Folkstone Harbour. Its now routed out of Waterloo so I will only see her at Folkestone, the joys of mainline steam.

Here we go then, had a load of probs in the engine house with my camera loads of interference, can only put it down to the lighting. The Royal Mail coach is the one that was robbed in the great train robbery.

Mike,

Thank you for the welcome!  Its nice to be here!

Joiner,

Thank you for the information.  I have seen too many photographs of American steam locomotives all lined up like that in dead lines.  Makes one feel terrible.
