Oh dear, how are children supposed to learn anything today? Is this really the closest to real steam children of today are allowed to play with?

It's no wonder our engineering industry has all but died a death in this country

My six-year-old daughter owns a Jensen 60, several little workshop models and two pop-pop boats. My little boy is about to turn three, and I'm wondering what to get him....he wants my TE1A.
People don't give their kids any credit these days, all part of this stupid drive for a risk free society.....young children can handle a little steam engine perfectly safely, as long as you keep an eye on them!

I totally agree Moose, I had an SR at 10, OK later than yours, but my dad let me fill it, fuel it and run it under his guidance - never outside his duristriction until was 13 or so . . .

Snap - I had my first engine for my tenth birthday - treasured it ever since, I still have it, my Wilesco D45. Still gets frequent outings, I like it just as much as when I first took it out of the box nearly 30 years ago.

My daughter loves Thomas and at 18 months that looks a good alternative to real steam. We go to the Bluebell for that, she likes nothing more than seeing the Bulleid Pacific in full steam pulling out of Sheffield Park.

For an 18 month old, I'd have thought this Thomas toy would be ideal too, but in our overprotective society of today this toy is apparently "Not suitable for children under 3 years of age"

Isn't it? Daniel's been coping allright with Thomas ever since he was big enough to grab it.
It's one of those things like putting "warning: hot beverage" on a cup of coffee.....all caused by our new litiginous society. It's a popular trick to blame our US cousins for this, but we were pretty quick to jump on the bandwagon. I recently had one of my students threaten to sue me after I refused him entry into the room half an hour into a one hour lecture. I told him to stuff it - I expect that was inappropriate language. Hey, I might go prison!

Best we go and play with the real engines at the Bluebell then, no warnings there, apart from the obvious
