Newbie dying to see a loco steam.

My apologies to all if as a newcomer this is yawn inducing but I am desperate to see say a Millie or an Edrig or anything similar in the flesh
(should that be in the metal?).  Am hoping come late autumn/early winter
to be in funds enough to start a modest garden layout -  nothing fancy but
reliable and fairly idiot proof (my fields of ignorance seem to grow daily wider). Prob is I have never seen anything live and I know nobody living within reasonable distance of Hereford who has one.  Also I wd. be so
very grateful if someone can suggest a book which in laymans terms explains steam working- this could avoid a large explosion in the garden
this winter.  Many ,many thanks. Buggins.

Welcome to the forum Ian, I hope you enjoy your stay here. We have quite a few dedicated loco/ garden railway fans here who can give you all the information you require. Please dont be afraid to ask, no question too silly or too obscure!

Hi Ian,

I suggest you join the 16mm Association: http://www.16mm.org.uk/

as that way you can find people in your area and join a local area group.

Edrig is to be discontinued after the next batch, being replaced by Ragleth which incorporates Edrig and Caradoc parts.

Edrig is better value for money as you get more features as standard than a Millie. Plus with the Basic range from Roundhouse the slip eccentric straps and slip eccentrics can wear quite quickly. Whereas Edrig has reversing Stephensons valve gear which is more reliable and less susceptible to wear.

MTA,Mike, Newts et al many thanks to you all for yr kind trouble.
As I said earlier I know nothing (yet) of inner workings of steam
so I floundered amongst MTA's cheerful chat re-valves etc. I Think I'll
look out a loco that doesnt bother with such things! Spec youll suggest
I go clockwork.......     Yup, ishall delve into the club suggested so thanks
for that gents.   Anyone a suggestion re some reading matter for an idiot
re steam working pse.?  Maybe one day I too can carelessly toss into
the conversation my experiences of clack-valves and lubricators but then again having said that clockwork sounds almost manageable.  I can only
muse in wonderment at yr. command of a foreign language.   Will be away
in York for a week from tomorrow(Sat.) for yearly hols so I'll be wandering
the corridors of the N.R.M. well I'm in an electric scooter (cant breathe too
well) in fact so will be cruisin' man!!   Only mention that so you dont think
I have forgotten my manners and not answered, anyway am here 'til about
10pm tonight.  Thank you all again, happy steamin' IAN.

Ian,

I recommend the book 'A Passion for Steam - Small scale steam locomotives and how they work' by Marc Horovitz.

It covers valve gear, cylinders, methods of firing etc. all appropriate to the garden railway scales.

MTA - you're a STAR! Many thanks will try and track a copy down unless someone here on the Forum has one they wish to sell me?  IAN

No problem Ian, that's what we are here for!

I've got a copy, but I don't plan on selling it. If you shop around you should be able to find a better price than that given on the Camden site.

Just for refrence, Edrigs do not have Stephensons valve gear! they have eccentrics operating the valves, and a reversing block (similar to a mamod one) for direction change.

Marc Horovitz's book is much cheaper on Amazon:

But if you fancy seeing the profit going to a friendly Narrow Gauge railway best place is here:
