MECCANO ENGINESThe MEC1 built from 1965-76. Designed by Malins Engineers to Meccano specification. Something of the 1929 engine in the frame design. Endlessly adaptable for all sorts of drive jobs. Replaced by the SP3 in 1979, which didn't last long - only until 1985 when sales were uneconomic. (Video games were getting popular one suspects!).
What I consider to be an essential engine which is endless fun and surprisingly powerful for the size.

The SP3 'Meccano' engine. As per the MEC1 save for solid fuel, sight glass and whistle (also no dome). Equally as adaptable as the MEC1.Can be expensive if boxed - I have seen one go for £400 on ebay (bidiots ). Around 10,000 units made.

I think its time my SP3 and MEC1 were incorporated into a new model . . . which though . . .

Interesting engines, I would love one of each
As a matter of interest in S.T.E.A.M. a few issues ago there was a piece on a "lookalike" Meccano engine constructed from a MEC1 fitted with a Burnac boiler. Looked pretty good too.

How about having a crane? You have one of the engines at the bottom of the 'tower' to rotate the boom via a shaft or what have you. Then the other engine sitting in the boom to raise/lower a load?

Not a bad idea MTA, but I have an SP5 crane - still in progress!
Plus Ill need half a ton more Meccano . . . .

Does the steam pipe enter the dome from inside the boiler...like some Bowman's do?
|
Spokesmann
|
Aye it does Chuck! on the SP3 version its just goes straight into the boiler - if you overfill it, it primes!!

I like that method...even thought about trying it in a scratch model.
I'd worry about the join de-soldering being so close to the flame!

As Mike is after some new ideas for a crane .......

Very nice Mike - saw one like that at STIA this year . . .

But it doesn't on the mamod locos, but then there is a sleeve in the boiler, some where push fitted and others soldered.

If i get my steam shovel built by STIA members can have a play with it

Mr Malins wanted to get rid of solder on boilers at one time
And use locktight to glue the joints
(Cost cutting excersise)

Interesting modification of an SP3 . . . .

Indeed, very interesting, looks like the Wilesco D49 boiler.

I think you are right John, I would like to see something beefier on there, maybe a D455 boiler . . .
Its not a half bad concept! having something of the 1929 engine about it!

This was the first Meccaon steam engine to be produced circa 1918 - 1920
This one is worth arond £1200
This is the original advert
And this is the 1929 version
With Mike's two engines, this is the full compliment of four.............. | am i correct in thinking that the earliest vertical meccano engine was german made?
|
Mamod Collector

Yes, the very first ones where made by Bing
The only other deviance was with the 1929 engine
The first ones didnt have the name Meccano pressed on the boiler
