Meccano CarsThis isn't toy steam but I hope you don't mind me showing you my Meccano Constructor Cars. These were made by Meccano in the 1930's and are a sort of kit car. Each box had enough bits to allow you to build the car 4 different ways. Meccano made these cars in 2 sizes and this pair of cars are the smaller No1.
This first car (yellow green) is boxed and has most of it's contents. The second car (blue cream) I got just as it is.
I hope you like them.

Wow! They are super Chris. First ones I've seen outside of a book.

Very nice
I saw a boxed mint example at a local toy fair a couple of weeks ago with the asking price of £750 ono.
I must admit to not knowing anything about it on the day but remember the lid of the box, as in your pic.

Thanks guys. I do like them and I've got some original instructions as well. I forgot how much Mike likes the paper stuff as well. I'll scan the instructions in the next couple of days.
Meccano seemed to start making these in aboout 1933 and finished for about 1939. As I said they did 2 sizes of car and loads of different colours.
They do seem to cost quite a lot but they are old (ish) and if you can get a box, and the other 'spare' parts, then I guess it will push the money up. (but I wouldn't go near £750).

Very nice indeed, the radiator looks very Singer.
Incidentally a Singer 1 1/2 Litre came 1st in class and 7th overall at La Sarthe in 1933.
Subsequentally Singer produced the LeMans '9' and 1 1/2 Litre.

Thanks for the comments. I kind of figured people may like them. Getting a No2 is on my want list for 2009, but so are a few more toy steam mobiles.
There's a Mamod DV2 coming up on e*** in the next couple of days that I may have a go at. After that it's keeping my eyes open for some of the older German stuff.
I plan this year (I say this every year) is to only add a couple of steam engines to the collection and to go for older, quality buys, rather than more copies of stuff I already have.

Marklin produced some very similar car kits and a couple of very splendid lorries 36cm long with clockwork motors. The one I like is the armoured car complete with turret. Almost enough to lure me away from steam but fortunately the guide prices resemble telephone numbers.

Thanks Fred. Any pics or direction to a website? Right I'll have to add "looking for a Marklin Constructor Car" to my want list.
Oh, the partner and kids will be happy.

All my info comes from"Walter's Sammler-Katalog Band4 Marklin Spielzeug 1909-1954"
Hans Willi Walter produced it . He has a website but I got mine when he was selling them on Ebay. Its a bit dated pricewise, I'm not sure if it ever went into a more recent edition. The Doll version is also very good Band5
Bands 1,2 and 3 cover trains rather than steam stuff so I've never forked out for them
