Latimer Plane L5 refurbishmentI have now painted the L5s steam pipes and burner. Using my usual paint by hand (in case anyone asks! ). I was going to dismantle the engine but the steam pipes are soldered at the engine end, so I decided to paint them in situ. Lamp was a doddle to do. The engine frame may be done in the future as the shade is a tad darker. Overall I'm very happy with the result, the L5 is an uncommon engine and I think it needs to be preserved for all to see, as they don't seem to come up that often. I have no idea of the production run of this model and the smaller L4. I think you will all agree (at least I hope you might!) it looks superb. Enjoy.
Burner has a new seal on the filler too.
As a footnote if anyone has more information on Latimer Productions, please please post it in the stationary engine reference area.

Are you sure you hand painted that, Mike

The lamp and the pipes - Yes!
I seem to have come in for some stick about my painting techniques from some ill-informed recesses of the tinternet!
Its just a good quality enamel, the paint does the work, lay it on generously with a clean brush and gravity does the rest!!

With hand painting you can, of course, get the different types of paint more easily.
I find that most aerosols don't have such a nice sheen and shine that normal paints have

With careful preparation you can, but the stuff from Halfords 'aint much good really. The enamel used is very thick and has a wonderful gloss to it. I like hand-painting. Each to their own I suppose! Stove enamelling is the best! I must add that the Forest Mamod Apple green is very good stuff, at £15 a can it should be.

Is there any finish I can use on a base plate that has no colour. the base was originally tin plate long since gone.I want to preserve the base metal to stop it rusting.

Hi MFSteam
I guess the base was originally steel that had been tin plated? That has since been lost exposing bare steel? If it has already started to rust you would have to remove it before you even thought about adding a coat of laquer or varnish.
If you want to preserve or keep it as is then dip the whole base in oil and keep it from the damp. If you wanted to add a clear coat of laquer I'm not sure how well that would take to bare metal, having never tried it myself
Hope thats of some help
Thanks

Thanks Steve
The engine is a runner and very prone to rusting, I was rather hoping you were going to say
"you need to buy a tin of..........."
I cant find anything to go straight onto bare metal, re-plating is an option but not cheap

Is it for a Wormar Ian?

yes, with a very troublesome boiler

Yacht varnish?

Does the baseplate of the Wormar have the logo on it, is it etched or something? remembering Colins display at Kempton, was going to say if not can the base be plated by a re-chroming or nickel plating outfit?

Why not just coat it in a mixture of beeswax and linseed oil boiled up in a sausepan, paint it on, let it cool and buff up, Should protect it while its not in steam. You would have to do it after every steaming mind

We dont get enough of Wormars on here, it would make a great thread - Ian/Simon's Wormar Woes . . ., we then can get back to Latimer?

As funny as it sounds Ive never had to or recommend someone protect bare steel before.
As has already been suggested you could use a bees wax, that would repel water at least till you fired it and it all melted off
Thanks

Neither did I until I bought my (now Paul's) L4

I have lots of favourites, the L5 is currently my flavour of the month, it is a very nicely proportioned toy engine.

Im lucky enough to have an L4 with it's original burner. I was never really bothered about an L5, but yours looks so good I'm now officially 'on the lookout'.
I wish you guys would stop doing this - it's all just too tempting.

If you're still interested Ian, I was recently buying some more cans from the Pasti-Kote Metal Protekt range (it's no wonder kids these days can't spell!!!), and I noticed a clear metal sealer, it's probably just a laquer but I thought I'd mention it as a possible solution.
