Might be a daft question but why is steam vented from the side of the loco ?
silverfoxsteam

That's a good question. When I'm 'on the regulator' I'm often asked by photographers for a little extra steam at a certain point or time. I usually oblige with a short burst from the drain cocks (and a little extra reg). My fireman's usually in on it, so some oily rags and a bit more coal often find their way in. I suspect that the video clip was set up with the crew, but without knowing a lot more about the loco concerned I can't be sure if the venting was the draincocks in this case. It looks just like a typical winter's day in Porthmadog!

Recon your spot on either pre-arranged or the driver saw the cameraman.

Looks much like Tagmere did on Saturday going through Godstone at about 70 mph on Saturday. The cold air really adds to the steam effect, still air really helps too. Its a great vid,

Stephen what do you drive?

That is too far back to be draincocks, my guess is that he might have opened a blow down valve Confused Then again I think there are two steam loco's there, as when the engine passes the camera you can see a smaller pulsing plume of steam. So who knows!

What I want to know is how they stop the water in the tender from freezing!

I agree with MTA, looks like it's a double header, gotta be the draincocks on the second loco.
