I.P. Jane RepaintI have just taken my Jane apart for a much needed repaint, all I can say is so much for standardisation!
All the nuts are different sizes One set of handrail knobs is different from the others, and the steam pipe is very winding...
The two sandboxes on the front are an example of the different nuts. The one on the left has a larger thread size, and has a steel nut. The other has a smaller thread and a 6BA brass nut!
Whoever painted it last didn't do a very good job. There are no signs of any primer, and it didn't have very long to harden as the paint has become 'crazed' where it is under another painted part i.e. the cab spectacle plate.
I'm repainting all the body work, including the smokebox and combustion chamber in VHT paint. The tanks and cab back will be dark green again, and the buffer beams wil be in vermillion.
Pics upon completion!

Keep them warm in your pocket until you need to use them, so no excuses we want pics !

Anyway, I have made some progress today.
I have stripped one of the buffer beams, which is awaiting some attention from wet & dry paper as the nitromors as attacked the metalwork and turned it slightly rusty.
I have decided to paint the coupling rods, with one of the pair in its first coat of primer. These will be in vermillion, like the buffer beams.
I have removed a rather nasty stain (melted bitumen!) from the dome, and polished it up with my Dremel. I now have to wear my sunglasses when looking at it 8)
The safety valve, regulator glands and fittings (except the spindle) and some of the gauge glass fittings have been sealed in place with pipe sealant so as to get rid of the rather unsightly PTFE tape.
The buffers have had a going over with a wire wheel in the Dremel, as there was a thin layer of black paint all over and the buffers will have a bare steel head (as it should be) with a vermillion buffer stock.
No pics I'm afraid... Should be next time around

Made a fair bit more progress today.
Both of the buffers are in primer, and I am literally just about to go out and give one of them its second coat. One is hanging under my bed to dry in what is a warmer environment than the garage!
The coupling rod I started spraying yesterday is now primed, and is also in my room drying.
I have spent what seems an age in getting the paint off of the smokebox casting. I have nearly finished this, and will apply Nitromors to the dummy rivets on the smokebox door hinges as the wire wheel in my Dremel can't get around them!
The smokebox is being painted in Hammerite BBQ paint, as I have started to join the way of thinking that most smokeboxes on the full size do become a very dull and dry matt colour (you only need look at 319 at Pulborough). The combustion chamber will also be painted in this.

I agree with you about the smokebox finish!

Thanks Mike
For those who don't know what I mean by the matt finish on locos, here's a pic of 319 at Pulborough.
Yours truly is driving, of course! Picture copyright of C. English.

I have some pictures of the Kings in services, they were alway kept in top condition, even right to the end, but I have noticed that some of the colour images from the early 1960s always seemed to show spotless paintwork with a vert matt finish to the black smokebox area.

As Victor's chassis needs running in, I have partially re-assembled the Jane.
At present she certainly wouldn't look out of place at an ugly bug ball.

I quite like it like that. It looks very industrial

Not ugly, but pratical and purposeful

Its far to ugly for your collection Simon
Perhaps you should donate it to me

You wish, Mike!
I ran her earlier to check everything and after an initial water spurt from the chimney (cured by slipping the chuff pipe back on) all is well.
