I've got to put a stop to this! You all know what happens. You do a search on OFAS just to see what's fetching what price, no intention of buying, not unless it's something special. And then it pops up, catching your eye. You put it on 'watching' and no-one bids. Still no-one bids. And still no-one bids. You start thinking has this one gone under the radar? Are you the only one that's interested, maybe the only one watching? Is it too good to be true?
Well, generally speaking it probably is, 'cos everyone else has spotted what you (looking through your rose-tinted spectacles) have missed.
However, getting on with the thread here, I ended up getting these three wo-begotten miscreants from Nuremberg via the States...
An Ernst Plank horizontal engine
A large Bing air conditioning unit
and a dredger (or I suppose it could be used as a water lift!) of unspecified make
The trouble is...
The boiler's cracked
The wire cage is
The wheel's loose and the chute's been repaired with a poor bit of soldering (my standard in fact!)
On the upside, If I was actually collecting a workload for the forseeable future it'd be great. And of course, when they're repaired and working all the trouble it took will be forgotten. (My memory's starting to go anyway!)
Actually, the dredger's pretty much sorted. A drop of superglue's fixed the loose wheel (reminds me of a song - "you chose a fine time to leave me loose wheel [Lucille] - one for any Country & Western fans), and the soldered joint's ok if a little 'generous'.
What do you all think? Am I a total idiot or just misguided?

Not misguided - whatever takes your fancy! we all have varying and differentt tastes! The boiler will take the major share of headaches in repairing...

Thanks, not misguided then - but I notice you don't comment on the idiocy!
Actually the boiler may not be a huge problem. I don't know if you recall the Doll engine I aquired for a song last year...
...well I've got a couple of old brass garden syringes that are very close to the size of these boilers. As long as I can reuse the end caps and other relevant fittings then it may work out.
Of course, you realise what I've done, don't you? The next time a brass garden syringe comes up on a certain auction site, it'll go for £50 - quick folks, turnout your sheds!

OK, OK - I hereby promise that the L5 will come first!
I just KNOW you'll keep prompting me!

Did you get stung for tax when they arrived

No Mike - the total was less than the threshold value for imports, which is about £35 I think. I've actually only got caught once for import duty and VAT and that was on a item priced at about £100 from the States.

brass garden syringe an object I am unfamiliar with.
as we use garden sprayers and the old ones were brass I have collected 2 from junk shops for $5.00 each end up with long brass tubes suitable for cylinders and larger brass tubes that make up the hand grip suitable for Boilers . maybe these are the same thing but because I went to a different school in a different country we call things by different names .
A syringe is used for antibiotics to jab and deposit under the skin or into the muscle but i also use syringes to oil my engines and fill with water

Yep - garden sprayers - those are the things. Probably called syringes as they suck up the liquid prior to spraying the contents over the roses!
Because they're old, they usually have a nice patina too.
