I've been holding this one back for a special occasion!

There's been lots of stuff about workshop tools, Mamod, SEL, Multum and all the wonderful German stuff, but quite by accident I obtained a certain little bench saw which I think may be of interest.

It arrived with a Bing stationary, and I had no idea what it was. Anyone recognise it in this photo?

Do you have a bigger picture Stephen?
MFSteam

Difficult to tell from the picture but is it a Mersey one?
Spokesmann

If it is I guess it's pretty rare like the lathe?
silverfoxsteam

Oooo - have I ever got some better pictures! I'm really glad you're logged on Ian 'cos I thought you'd appreciate it.

How's that?

I've mounted on a plywood base to sort of match the Mersey engines...

Have a look in the video section later!

Well I got the saw (with the Bing) last June I think and, as I said, at the time I didn't realise what the saw was. When light dawned I thought it needed a decent base before I 'revealed to the world' - that took a while!
MFSteam

Thats a nice piece Stephen, you don't see many of them.

I have a little 51, alas it need a burner. I know Ian loves these engines - when you see the many variations its not hard to know why everyone wants a Mersey!

Its funny, Mersey's are held in such high regard by many, including myself but they are far from being high quality engines. They had some very innovative ideas, the multi cylinder engines are quite superb in their design but like the others in the range their build quality is less than superb.
You find many Mersey boilers that have had their bushes pushed inside, this is due to the poor quality of the soldering, in addition there are 5 known examples of new unfired engines that have end caps that were only soldered part the way round.
Another gripe is the not so Big, big end, many have simply worn out.

Funny you should say that Ian, the crankpin on my little 51 has startd to work loose now . .  .

That said there is something very distinctive about the plywood based and black gloss paint.

Yes - that's the one I've seen too. The grindstone looks familiar, I wonder if Mersey bought-in like Bowman used to?
