I Have a Boiler. I need to finish it.

and having spent my allowance I decide to build 1
I have a 105 mm (4 inch) brass shell

the end has bee cut off  for use in the flywheel of the Beam engine

after taking a hacksaw to the rest

I end up with 2 pieces  both have been flattened out
both have now been annealed  via the inbuilt fireplace that we are using at the moment
I have started to bend the ends over in readiness to join up
to make my desired size

the other flat pieces will be sufficient to get my end plates I hope

Hope to se more Dennis, good luck. I enjoy your hands on get stuck in approach!

This looks really interesting!

Go for it !!!

I bouht a shell a couple of weeks ago from my local flee market
So this thread will be interesting, good luck with the boiler Den  Very Happy

I have 2 more shell in my shed and I intend to build a vertical engine along the lines of a Scorpion  but as kiwi's are better i will build it bigger !! I have already sourced a burner (brass) which will hold about 250 mls meths!! Shocked  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked  more photos coming tonight as got rained off this afternoon until milking time.so managed to get some more done
Spokesmann

That burner will need a big boiler Dennis.
Scorpion2nz

boiler joined and soldered along main seam

end cap stage 1
I turned 2 wooden discs to hold the endplate between  in the vice and proceeded to start tapping it over
and ended up with this

after annealing it  repeat process

then into the lathe to square up
Scorpion2nz

finished part

and blow me over it fits  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked

I was surprised it was so easy as I am working with 2mm thick brass
the boiler is 70mm diameter and 150 mm long
Mamod Collector

Excelent Den................I like this thread  Very Happy
Scorpion2nz

I have been busy  making bits for the boiler and here they are

now this will have you all thinking Laughing  Laughing
Spokesmann

How big is it Dennis. Things seem to be proceeding well.
Scorpion2nz

diameter about 70 mm and length 150 mm and now i think it  may be to big for my beam engine . Waste of time  Waste of time .  So may have to make a smaller one (boiler) and then make a bigger engine for this boiler
Mamod Collector

Hard to think that used to be a gun shell, excelent workmanship Den  Very Happy
Scorpion2nz

all the bushes in place and solder with silver solder

and end view of the chimney

also silver soldered
and here we have
Mexican wave
completed

I did soft solder the ends on
and I have tested  it to 40 lbs a square inch I only had 1 leak
and that was the chimney at the top of the boiler  Sad
I can not test any higher than that as compressor not strong enough
so may have to make another adapter so I can use the one at work
Spokesmann

Looking very tidy Dennis, should be more than sufficient for your needs.
Mamod Collector

Give yourself a big pat on the back Den thats excelent
All you have to do now is give it to the wife to polish  Very Happy

I just quoted this to my wife and her reply is not repeatable here
to make it simple it starts with F  and ends with F   Shocked  Shocked

It was worth a try Den  Very Happy

Looking good !

You make it look so easy. How about some video next time you're soldering?
Scorpion2nz

Video while soldering  Shocked  Shocked
I had enough trouble find spare hands and trying to see what I was doing in side the boiler  and you want me to video what I am doing  Question  Question
is that with sound or with out Question  Exclamation  Exclamation  if with sound then I may have to provide you with ear plugs  Laughing
Mamod Collector

You could always ask the wife to help Den  Very Happy
On second thourts, better not  Smile

With sound please Dennis, otherwise it just wouldn't be authentic (we can add the bleeps).

I have progressed a little more .I now have a fire box

and a Safety valve
lots of muttering with this I broke 2 X 1.5mm drill bits

to give you some ides of size the shaft is 1.6mm diameter threaded with 9BA and the larger thread is 2 BA to fit the bushes in the boiler
I wanted to put brass eyelets around the firebox vents but only eyelets I can find are brass plated  so tomorrows challenge is to make some dies so I can use my arbor press and make some in sheet brass
Spokesmann

Progressing well dennis, i can see a few visial influences in there! Excellent work.
Mamod Collector

Looking good Den  Very Happy

Coming together well - nice detail of the build.
Scorpion2nz

well the weekend is finished and I have made some progress.
no brass eyelets as I can not find in my shed the steel I was going to use for Dies
but instead we have

a displacement oiler with flange fittings
a regulator with flange fittings

a closeup  of the regulator with the flange fitting
one flange screws on top the regulator  via 5/32 BSW
the bolts holding the 2 flanges together are 9BA (damn small)

this shows the incoming steam line into the oiler
I have used flanges to join the boiler to the engine so it can be unattached real easy  with out having to unsolder joins
I have used flanges  as my attempts to make olives and crox nuts was a disaster to say the least
the flanges are 12mm across the widest point and the copper pipe is 1/8th OD
please excuse the close ups as I can not get my camera (cheap) to do any better. I think I need to sell a steam engine and buy better camera
and to top it all off today
Other half look at the boiler and asks where is the flywheel

Great stuff and an interesting thread.

I must admit to having a chuckle about the 1.5mm drills Very Happy .. Been there done that got the Oh hell! bit stuck under my nail.

Try running your lathe at absolute full speed when drilling very small holes, a dab of tapping compound also helps stop those " oh sh1t moments"
Spokesmann

Coming together well Dennis, great attention to detail. Like the Disp oiler...!

check out the video in the video section
