I'm not into "look how many engines I've got" and its not really that important. What I think is more important is that they bring me (and hopefully my kids) enjoyment and through them I have met some great friends. So for me it doesn't matter if you have 1, 100 or even a thousand engines.

Not many here.
Roundhouse Bertie
2 SL1s
MF Twin
Luton 203
TE1a
SR1a
Car
Van
That is more than I thought! 9.
Edit, I forgot the greatest value for money per £ poppop boats so I have 11.
Got to agree though, fun is far more important than number.

Im with Ian. Over that last 5 years I have rationalised my collection into the area Im really interested in - Bowman and post-war English toy steam up to 1979. I have reduced my SE3 content from 7 down to 3 which gives an idea of how I have reduced my collection . . . .

I'm not like you, I am very much a sort of see something I like and buy, however there are things I look out for all the time, currently Mamod locos and Jensens

I cant afford all of them Jim, plus I find Im not so interested in all engines now, Im interested in most of the toy steam stuff, but only a samll section really fires my enthusiasim... its this area that I have decided to concetrate on, and I know Im not alone.

I'm with Ian and Mike on this one, I'd far sooner sell a couple of the more common engines in my collection to buy something more interesting. For me it is again a case of "quality not quantity"

Going back to the origional subject.
I think number games are pointless becouse it is then just down to who has the largest bank acount.
I buy engines that I like and enjoy having them for what they are

I agree, a finite limit on resources concentrates the mind.

Agreed
When I was young I used to buy anything and everything my small amount of money would let me. I soon ended up with a large amount of engines that needed work, some of which I had no interest in. It got to a point where I had so many engines that needed work I would never do them all. There is no point in having things like that so I now much prefer to buy engines from a focused point of view. I slip up now and again and buy something German/American even Swedish but this is only when I see something I really like.

at present i have around 40 but i'm slowly scaling and selling 1 or 2
as in the past i would see and buy anything but i'm now looking for quality rather than quanity, you can only fire up 1 or 2 at a time so i don't see the point in having my shelves stacked to the prim with engines that will proberly never get fired up

The question was not to brag but to see who has the most interest
I agree quanity is not every thing .Perhaps i should of said who has the most different type of model.

Some great comments and I can't disagree with anything said. However, I do have one of those minds that likes to collect 'sets'. Once I had a small Fleischmann Roller I wanted an example of it's larger sister. Once I had a few different Mamod TE's...... I wanted more.
I do limit my collection to what I think is 'toy' steam (no models) and I do stick with the mobiles (but I do own 1 Jensen).
The other thing we have to remember is that some of us have been at this longer than others. Adding a few engines each year can make a huge difference to someone who has been playing with steam toys for 30 years as opposed to someone who has been at it for 3 years.
The great thing about our hobby is the fact that we can all have our place. And so I now confess..... I own quite a lot of mobiles. Some as common as they come. Some a bit more unusual and a few rare engines. I enjoy them all. Some just sit on shelves and will never be run. Others get regular use.
Oh and I'm still collecting, still looking for those few special engines I need to make parts of collection more complete and I love it.

My prime objective when I started 'the collection' rather than having one or two out of interest, was to build up a representation of the genre for public display. However, as I got further and deeper into it bacame apparent that the range, historically, was for greater than I first thought (and I'll bet that was the same for most of us). The result is that the public aspect has been put back a while until I'm satisfied that I can do a reasonable job of it! First show will be at the Welsh Highland (WHHR) later in the year.
