Hobbies/Mamod 'Arrow' - "Spirit of Freesteam"Well the boat is 98% finished, I just need to give the hull an all-over varnish with oil-based lacquer. The Project was started in July 2006 and in fits and starts has continued, sometimes at a very slow rate or not at all.
The boat is my first foray into this sort of building, so the next time I should be quicker!  Im going to build another using the ME3 engine instead, which because of its shorter baseplate gives plenty more room inside the hull. Im thinking about it already and how I will need to adapt the plans to suit. As with this one, it will feature no mod-cons of any description (RC) and will be entirely built using hand tools. This one is going to be left for a few weeks now whilst paint, glues and lacquers dry and harden thoroughly. I will then do some engine tests and checks in the bath!
In the meatime here are some better images of the 'Arrow'.
The boat itself weights about 5-6 lbs is 26" in length with a 4-1/2" beam approx. It is powered by a c1958 Mamod ME1 engine complete with oiler and brass vapourising lamp. It differs in dimentions from the plans by having a much narrower stern end, and a different layout to accommodate the ME1 and its baseplate.

The brass lamp is held by serrations on the baseplate of the ME (an original feature dropped in later models), the lamp incorporates its own firebox end cover - held tight by removeable wooden screen which is a opush fit into a formed oblong receptacle...

I have to build one now Mike, I enjoy this, gave a few of my woodworking and metal working skills a much needed boost. Next boat will be a more faithful copy of the original Arrow plans, finished in yellow and black and will be powered by a Mamod ME3, tentative name will be "Marion" after my late mother.

With the E101, it weighs about the same as the Arrow.

I keft this one Jim, because I took on too much in the form of other engines... this was a much more satisfying project rather than polish and clean!

Started sketching a few ideas for the ME3 powered boat today, I will be experiemnting with a brass engine cover, similar to the type used on the Luton steam boats - complete with funnel...
