Hobbies 1923 Miss AmericaI've just acquired a restored Hobbies Miss America steam launch but no burner. The boiler is the short fat version and there is a square burner pit chiseled out underneath. It clearly does not use the conventional Bowman type burner. Does anyone have any hard information on what i need to make?
Thanks
Fred

If the burner is anyhing like a Luton type I could supply images/dimentions Fred. Sounds a very nice purchase!

Another though - Odilon has lots of Bowman catalogues and literature, he might have something . . .

The Miss America predates everything I have I'm afraid.....I'm sure the Bowman Circle will be able to help you though!

a couple of photos, the 1923 Miss America is at the front, the 1927 version is at the back. Both have been restored but the 1927 version lacks a spray hood and the boiler itself looks a bit fishy.
The close up shows the firebox area of the 1923 boat. The cut away slot below the firebox can be clearly seen and seems to indicate a pot type burner with a top mounted wick.
Both boats are in far better shape than my recent acquisition, the Bowman Eagle seen below which appears to haave been treated to a generous coat of creosote.

Excellent images there Fred, the 1923 boat looks to have a cut down boiler, it seems to have an old Mamod 3/8" SV too. Superb looking machines . . .

The boiler matches the image in the 1923 advert but the SV is indeed a modern short spring Mamod unit. The oddy is the 1927 boiler which seems higher than the advertisment illustration which also appears to show a perforated cover sheet rather like the mamod meccano engine.
If you want to be really picky you will see that the SeaHawk has what is clearly a rather poor replacement spraydeck. compare with the Eagle spraydeck. Incidentally Eagle came with a spare rear deck. Seems genuine enough if a bit scratched.

Great looking machines - I see what you mean about the spray deck are you going to 'restore' any of them in any way - apart from mechanical details? The cut down boiler really looks small! There is something very appealing about all 4 together . . .

What a fantastic fleet Fred
although the Miss America is restored, It appears to be very well finished & sympathetically done. Could we pelease have some close up pics of the steam units etc.
