Nick

Hello from Minnesota

I suppose I should introduce myself to those of you that don't know me.

I am Nick from Minnesota, USA.

I have been collecting steam engines for a couple of years, but in the last 6 months my collection has really grown.

The first steam engine I ever saw was my grandpa's Robert Fulton vertical (runs on sterno), that he received with an erecter set from his older brother.

The second one was a Jensen 65 that my dad bought when I was younger.

My first engine I got was a Jensen 76 that I found in my great-grandpa's house when we were cleaning it out.

Ebay introduced me to the many different brands of engines and I think I'm hooked.

The following was my collection in January. I'll let you guys take a look and then I'll gather all my new purchases for an update. (Keep in mind, I have bought several more since this)

Welcome to Freesteam
Spokesmann

Glad to have you along Nick.

Great set up there and some very interesting tools! Although not a Jensen man myself, many of the members on here rave about them, so you are in good company.

Great to see some images of your kit!

I just finished taking pictures of my additions.

They should be up in about 10 to 15 minutes at the most.

It was a lot of work to gather them all up, so I must have bought too many. Laughing
Nick

The last pictures were taken on January 29, 2008, and was my entire collection.

Since that picture, I have added the following (I forgot a Jensen 35 and a Jensen 15 generator):

Those wooden based Jensens are a joy, what would one expect to pay for good examples?
John Chapman

Welcome Nick, good to see your wonderful collection.

They can get a bit spendy. Laughing

I'll start with the cheapest:

I paid under $50 for the 35 on ebay:

I got this one from an antique shop for $175:

And I found these two from a guy that had a different engine on ebay. They cost me $1000 for the pair. Shocked

MFSteam

the 35 does not really do it for me but the others are really good. $175 sounds reasonable for the boxed one.

The 35 is only fun if you can regulate the speed, I use a variac for this.

There was a cast base/flywheel 25 listed on ebay last night with a BIN of $150.
I almost bought it, but didn't have the money. John Reid ended up with it:

would have tempted me had I seen it.

The wooden bases look very nice, so much better than the pressed steel types.

and the pink fireboxes Very Happy

thats no bad thing. I have read somewhere that Forest Classic who import Jensens to the UK have painted fireboxes black for the uk market.
Spokesmann

Does the black burn off! Laughing
MFSteam

What is the general feeling about the Pink on your side of the pond? Is it well received?. its a bit like the current Mamod range, no one seems to rate its build quality. Crying or Very sad
Nick

I'm not really sure how people feel about the pink fireboxes. I don't know anyone personally with steam engines.

I personally prefer the flat sided, black fireboxes.

You can remove the pink paint before firing it and it reveals a nice copper plating underneath.

The original brick embossed fireboxes were just copper, without the pink paint. I'll take a better picture later, but you can kind of see it on this early Jensen 65:

that looks like a mamod minor 1 vaporising burner in that picture, not the most common of things

The burner to the left is more rare. It's for the only meths-fired Jensen. I'm not sure what the far right one is. Confused
John Chapman

Not keen on Jensen's pink fireboxes myself.  My model 60 dis-coloured badly after only two or three firings so I re-sprayed the firebox with high temperature black.  I think it looks a lot better than the pink.

Nick

John, that looks much nicer.

Can you post a picture of your meths fired Jensen, so they know what I'm talking about?

I'll try and get the burner measurements to you tonight after work.

Now repeat after me - "Mail that burner to John" - "Mail that burner to John" - "Mail that burner to John"   Very Happy

Here's the engine it is designed to go in the meths fired model 75.

Thanks Nick.  If you need any measurements  of the 75 just let me know.

I cant believe how much that Jensen burner looks like this one, its one of my Wormar replicas with a real one. The larger Wormar and early Bowman engines had longer burner tubes. Was Mr Jensen the proud owner of an Early Bowman engine by chance?

Spokesmann

The similarity to a Bowman type burner did strike me too.
John Chapman

It's very similar to a Bowman burner.  It will be interesting to see how it compares in size.  Sadly my 75 is missing it's burner but it runs beautifully with one from an SE3.

A fine selection of engines & accessories Nick, great to see them all  Very Happy

The early jensen burner is very similar to these

Thanks Nick.  If you need any measurements  of the 75 just let me know.

Is there any specific measurements you want?

Do you want them in metric or standard (mm or inch)?
John Chapman

Height and diameter of the tank and diameter and length of the tube would be appreciated Nick.  Metric or standard, I'm old enough to understand inches.   Wink
