FlyWheel teaserTurned this up today .I have been scratching my head looking for a flywheel for a near completed project. I come across a 4 inch
(105 mm) brass military shell and proceeded to cut the base off . I now have a flywheel with a 10mm thick rim
Had to knock the primer out and hole left is to big for my crank shaft so had to turn a bush which is still attached to the round bar stock
had to drill and tap holes so can secure the flywheel to bush as my
soldering would be insufficient to heat it all up
here it is sitting in place
the holes are tapped 5/32 BSW
which for those in the know are meccano

Thats Excelent Dennis, what engine is it for

what engine is it for !!
well at the moment that is a state secret
but I did download the plans of the net (john-tom.com) and thought this looks easy.
but just after i start i realize that half the measurements are not there so consequently I am a little balder than i was before
Engine is assembled just waiting for the flywheel to be attached then hopefully it will go.
I did stuff up the semi rotary valve by putting the grooves across the top and bottom when they should have been top to bottom on both sides
So when it finally goes it will get pulled to bits then polished and new valve made and all will revealed but it has taken me 3 months to get to this stage so do not hold your breath for any over night sensation

I'll go along with you two

well the flywheel is of some use
the entire thing is built from bar stock
I only have a small lathe and a drill press which I have attached a cross slide vice so it doubles as a mill
the engine is in the rough unfinished stage
I now need to pull it to bits and finish and polish and build a boiler
if you look closely at the rotary valve you will see that i put the grooves the wrong way around
this is what happens when your plans are incomplete and the brain does not work

Dennis that far in better of what I can do, Im not a builder like that... thats pretty damn good by most peoples standards and will look terrific when its finally finished off and painted and of course attached to a boiler. What are your plans for the boiler to drive this? Are you making that too?

well the boiler is still in the thinking stage but I have been toying with the idea of a vertical possibly utilizing another 4 inch artillery shell
as I now have myself a 4 ton arbor press so can make formers and shape the boiler top. I will possibly have the top domed. If i do this boiler then I will have plenty in reserve for bigger engines
