Exciters are still big in comparasion to that Wink

You have to boost up the voltage to start a vast scenic ride so it needs to be big.

What about a Mamod super scenic Very Happy
Mamod Collector

Ill try a get it to a rally this year to see if any of the exibiters can identify it
The person who gave it to me is certain its something to do with a full size steam engine

Could it be off a miniture steam engine, something like the one below ?

avenger

Too small to be off a full size its got to be off a miniture.

Even if it were to fit on a Gold Medal tractor you'd be talking atleast 10"to12" long Wink

It's not very similar...its about double the size Confused It also has a flat next on one end, a control box in the middle and a different shape end with bits milled out whereas yours is solid Confused

Acctually its half the size, that one has a 4 1/2 inch diameter body mine has a 8 inch diameter body  Wink
I think its safe to say its a dynamo, albeit from a minuture steam engine and not a full size one  Very Happy

I was using the measurement of lenght you have in the initial post "it measures approx five inches long"...the one for sale is 10 1/2" Smile Thats where the confusion arrose Laughing
MFSteam

How can the length be less than the diameter? It certainly doesn't look like it is that proportions.

Is it just an electric motor?

Ahh the old diameter versus the length illusion
Well the length is 5 inchs and the diameter is 8 inches
This video will explain it for you  Very Happy

Me to   Shocked

It started off as a simple plea for help in identifing the item below
I'll stick it back in my spares box and leave the question for another time

Spokesmann

Id use it, rather put it in a box. Lob it down here . . . .  Wink

If we could establish what size it is some of us might be able to suggest what it is for.

There have been so many suggested sizes that the actual size of this thing is not clear.

Try taking a pic with something to show a size comparison
Spokesmann

Put it next to a TE (Mamod) Laughing

MC I agree with Mike why not power it up even if you only stick it in your drill and connect a meter across it, or conversly connect a battery to it see if it turns I would even connect it to a car battery the rule always being if it get hot the voltage is too high. For the record there is little difference a to DC motor and generator turn it and up get power apply power and you get motion. I recon as I said earlier this is of a minuture what size not sure but would suggest around 3". Have a look at some full size ones. Hope this helps http://www.prestonservices.co.uk/dynamos.htm

Thx for you input guys, that website "Preston services" has gone straight into my favourties, some facinating stuff on there  Very Happy
