Doll 502 LocomobileI received this engine back in February, and I had not yet fired it up.
I recently had some Meccano chain arrive, so I was finally able to run it!

Well, I lit the burner and let the steam build up. I was just ready to flick the flywheel and then the sight glass seal blew. In the video, you can see some kind of gummy/sticky stuff the previous owner had used to seal it.
And then there was water everywhere.

They are very fragile looking Nick, the seal is repairable but maybe it should steamed infrequently, might be worth asking Manx for some advice about it. A curios creation indeed.

Mike, you would be surprised how well-built this engine really is. The only fragile part is the replacement gear on the rear wheel (looks like it's off a Weeden). It should have one like this engine:

I bought the engine to steam it, so I will run it often. It was fairly cheap as well at $250.
The seal was easy to fix and I soon had it running. I'm not sure why I waited for the chain before steaming it, by the looks of it, you don't even need one. This thing moves around worse than a Minor!

And here it is running around my basement

Boy it shifts! I always think they look fragile from the look of them, probably a different matter when one is handled.

Will it run backwards?

Likes either direction, unlike a TE or SR.
