c1969 Screw crank SE3

I have run this odd variant of the SE3 today, when first run some months ago the performance was disappointing. I have loosened the screw cranks somewhat and checked and lubed everything else. Todays run was much more inline with what we would all expect from and SE3.

This version of the SE3 has screw cranks and the very shorted lived and poor push button whistle. It also has the characteristic hammered green paint on the engine frame. It is seen here driving the 54 SE2 workshop. All in all a much better run and as you can see from the videos which will be up soon, the the engines raises plenty of steam and makes lots of noise too.

Hope you all enjoy it. This has been a totally sh!t week for me and having some quality escapism by running a great engine goes in someway to obliterating all the life can throw at you in terms of stress and trouble.

Enjoy.

Preparation

Note the appalling push button whistle. Onece pushed down, it stays open!

Now we are cooking on gas...

Excellent run Mike. All appears to be sorted now. Very nice picture and video sequence - thanks.

I've experimented a little with the timings on oscilating twin cylinder engines (SE3 and SEL Major), sometimes 'accidentally', and always found that a pretty exact 180 deg (as close as the eye can achieve anyway!) works best. Can't wait to experiment with an M122 if I could just get my hands on one...

That's really running well now Mike, glad she's sorted.  Very unusual whistle design that.

Unusual John, but not very efficient. You can see in one video it sticks open. I bought it because it had the two unusual feature in its spec.

This was the best I got out of this engine last time:

I remember our introduction to this particular engine well, it was the suicide button whistle that held my attention.

Glad it's giving a better performance now Mike.

I like the idea of a suicide button Smile, seriously it stays down once pushed down, you can only get it up again with pliers or a damp cloth - I think that was the fatal flaw in the design, the spring doesn't work too well, that and the 'heat resistant plastic' expands and sticks!
