Burnac Vulcan burnerI started to sort a template today for the burner, form the measurements given by members I was able to draw an accurate drawing of all the parts. I will then cut these from brass sheet and solder together. This will be an ongoing project . . . .
It fits! I will lap joint the sides of the tank and try and form the lipped parts around some wood or something...

But it doesn't last as long
Coming on nicely Mike, I'll be watching progress with interest as I need to make a couple of burners myself.

Ive been thinking about this one....
For the base of the burner, I was thinking of foring the main (round) body first - thus making a 'hoop' of brass, then soldering that to a slightly oversised sheet of brass. The cutting and filing the edges to fit. Sound OK?. As for the 'lid' I will solder a piece with a lipped edge for that.

can be done like that you just have to be careful that you dont unsolder the seam of the hoop as you solder the base on. you could overcome that problem by silerv soldering the seam

Good point MF! More to this burner malarchy than meets the eye!

1 5/8" - 1 3/4" tube would help you out. I'll have a look.

Here's the brass sheeting Im going to use for the burner...
As you can see I have got plenty!
Its from our Heidelberg MO-E press, the sheets are good quality brass about .75mm thickness (sorry don't have a micrometer) and about 770 x 600mm. Should do the trick, I have cut some out to get an idea of how strong it will be. I might make the handle double thickness. Time for some soldering practice methinks!

Are you sure its not your door step

Its of the quality needed, these sheets cost around £60 when new, the lines in it are made by the perforating wheels fitted when some jobs need numbering and perfing on press.

I had a few moments to progress this project today. I have begun to clip out the brass parts ready for soldering. I have been practicing on my soldering and have come to the conclusion I need different solder! Anyway here are a few images of the marked out parts. The compass was made by my dad when he served his apprenticeship at Willoughby Brothers in Plymouth's once thriving Millbay Docks.
