Building a Thakeham No.5-ish loco

Despite saying that I wouldn't be starting another project before I finished another one I have done just this. I'm going to produce a loco on a Binnie Engineering bolster wagon chassis for about £15, it will probably have the pulling power of a shrimp, but as it only needs to haul about 3 empty skips this should be fine. The body work will be based around this little loco which runs at Amberley ( http://narrowgaugeindustrial.fotopic.net/c428817.html ). I'm taking photos throughout the construction with the ambition of writeing a couple of articles for SMT or Garden Rail as the design is very diverse, it's simple to build and there are a whole range of ways you could improve the loco.

I spent a couple of hours cutting a motor mount, probably the most critical bit which needs making,  it was then superglued to the frame.

Motor mounted on the mount with araldite, the gear was quite loose so I slapped a lot of araldite there to hold it.

We shall find out tomorrow if this £9 chassis works, if it does then I'll probably put it in a box and work on it after my exams.

Brilliant Will, very clever!

Love it Smile

Good practice for someone who has never modelled in plasticard do you think? Smile

Yes, it will have a plastikard body which will require use of all the basic skills this material requires. Encase you haven't realised that allthough the bolster kit is 32mm only you could buy a 45mm tipper, allthough the frame is different with a bit of thinking it should work.

Interesting work SB keep us posted!

Ahhh I remember talking to you about building one of these!!

My favorite of amberleys little locos!

Keep us posted!

Chassis does work, quite nicely. Much more relaxing than any of my other current projects, I've decided to leave the stepped cab out as it's far too much hassel.

What are thoe cab sides made from SB, card?
SillyBilly

Plastikard, you can steam it or put in boiling water and it can be rolled, bent, ect...

Very Nice!!
remeber it only has couplings on the engine side, for its two skip trains it was working! I think thakem number four would be easy to make if not well boring!

That's right, the Thakeham locos only had couplings at one end as the skips were only ever on one end of the locos.

You would need a small motor for Thakeham No. 4!

This has been taken in to consideration, I've decide to only fit it with an ON-OFF switch as propelling would be a nightmare, and I have loads of them spare.

LOL sounds reasonable!

Nocked up the bonnet now, I may do some fileing work on the round cutout at the front to improve it a bit more but I'm worried the edges would loose stability it I was to make them too thin. Louvres tomorrow, may even buy some green spray.

Coming on SB, nice to see this little project progressing.
