Bowman M140 EngineI have recently been given a set of plans for the Hobbies Arrow and am going to order the wood after I finish my next boat; a Midwest Fantail.
I would like to use a Bowman inspired engine for it but rather than buying one I would like to have a go at replicating the engine and boiler from a M140.
I was wondering if anyone could give me the measurments for the engine frame on the M140 and the size of the round crank, I am assuming I can get the other measurments from my M158 as that uses the same basic unit.
Can I also have the measurments for the boiler please? I intend to make a silver soldered (as it will be gas fired) replica to fit into the boat

I made a small twin out of two Mamod Minor1 cylinders, it was about the size of a M140 unit except the bores were a little smaller. If you used two SP1 cylinders you would get a closer match. These should be fairly easy to find.

Thats a good idea, I shall think about that. I have one SP1 or MM1 cylinder spare I think.
I'd like to have a go at replicating the engine accuratley however as I think it would be a nice challenge for my skills.

Jim a few dimentions + or - 1mm
Boiler diameter: 50mm
Length: 115mm (not inc OFP)
Height on FB: 100mm, not inc dome.
Engine overall width across both cylinders: 80mm
Engine height: 61mm, not included counter shaft gear
Round crank: 25mm diameter. 8mm thick
Engine length overall from cylinder end to edge of f/wheel: 65mm, 60 with no f/wheel.
Hope that helps, I know someone who has made a boat with an M140 engine similar to the Bowman Seahawk, driving the prop through a contrate gear to turn the drive through 90 degrees.
Let me know if you need some more dims or pics.

Thanks very much Mike!
Would you be able to get a picture looking at the engine from the top, looking at the engine from the side with the engine in front of the firebox and one looking at the chimney end with the flyewheel and burner at the rear? I can put the measurments on the photos then and visualise what I need easier than a list

Thankyou very much!
I've nearly drawn the boiler out now!
Can I have a top down view of the boiler aswell if it's not to much trouble?
What are the dimensions of the steam dome?
What is the thread size and size of the bushes of both the filler plug and the safety valve?

I ll check Jim, thread sizes etc are not my area, MF or Mike will know...

Dome size is as per 158 or 167 or your 130.

Thankyou Mike, have now drawn up the boiler, firebox and chimney
Can you measure the base for me aswell please?

Ill do that when i get home Jim. The M140 is a little odd as its looks intially the same as the M/E158, but is a bit larger...

Thankyou! I was thinking the same thing, I thought the boiler and base were the same as my 158!

Will someone measure for me, the height from the bottom of the firebox to the centre of the vent holes. Also the distance from the two ends of the firebox to the centre of the first vent holes and the distance between centres of two vent holes.

Base is 167mm square.

Thanks Mike!
I now am surrounded by Bowmans in bits, however I can't measure everything I want to as my Vernier has run out of batterys-damn digital stuff!
I need to convert from decimal inches ie, 1.25" to 1 1/4", for the easy ones like that its okay, but for 7/32" or something similar is there a programme or equation I can use?

You need some engineers tables!

I didn't think to look in my Zeus book! First page
Edit, just checking, the information I have in this chart is about the decimal and fractional equivilants of drill sizes up to 1". Can I use this for the fractional equivilants of measurments other than drill sizes?
I haven't got my grandad here to help me
