A few images of work so far...
Most of the brass work is done now, save for the boiler which has had all oxidation removed using progressively finer wet and dry - by hand I might add. Still work to do here. Baseplate took 3 lots of Nitromors to remove the old paint. Some of the original Bowman racing green was underneath, along with a faint outline of a decal. The firebox has begun to be smoothed down to remove surface rust and any loose paint.
Still work to do here:
The brass has an almost pink tinge to it...

Looking good Mike, have you polished the brass by hand ?

Yes, with wet and dry - the polishing will come last. I do it all by hand, I never use power tools on this sort of job, except for the very, very worst of rust, corrosion and oxidation... you get a more sympathetic finish, mad some would think, but I have always done thing the hard way!

I should add once polished the brass will be allowed to dull down to a deeper rich yellow. Some more images tonight.

I have split this part of the topic from the previous part in collections as it deals with refurbishment and not just straight gallery images.
Work continues... I have now finished the brass and copper work and am preparing the parts which need to be re-painted, ie the firebox, chimney cowl, boiler band and baseplate.
Baseplate looks ala Wormar!

You moving fast with this one Mike
Are you going to hand paint or spray paint the boiler housing and base plate ?

Im going spray paint the parts this time Mike, I have some very nice dark green spray paint (not Halfords!) and some tough black spray plus plenty of primer so Im going to use them up on this engine.

Its all pretty straightforward stuff Mike, the engine mechanically is perfect, save for the SV and some seals so its a straightforward cosmetic make-over.

A few images of painting in progress, sorry a bit boring but I'll include them for completeness!
Here we have the base plate taking the first of three light coats of primer, a rub down between coats is done too. The boiler firebox, boiler band and funnel cap have had 3-4 light coats of hammerite gloss. Note home-made spray booth made of large A2+ sized card board panels. This will be allowed to harden for a few months before a steaming will be carried out.
I used this stuff on my M122D and with plenty of time allowed for the paint to harden properly, it seems to be reasonable tough.
I wish I had some of Ian's stove enamel to hand though!
Base plate painting is in progress today as its warm and sunny and with no wind too.

Last few images before the rebuild, I have not tried in any way to polish out every mark or imperfection on this engine, to basically wear out the brass! The engine frame red has been left and the engine frame screws left undisturbed - they simply do not need it. The rest of the completed engine images will be found in the M101 thread under collections and gallery images.
I have included a couple of spacers to get the end float right on the two shafts.
Since the engine will ultimately be steamed there is no point in polishing the hell outta the underside of the boiler, the firebox has been left as it was intended and no after market 'liners' installed.
