Bowman Luton Snipe restorationFinally gotten around to doing work on my Bowman Luton Snipe....when I got it it was extremely dirty, had been crudely repainted with a lot of the new paint flaking off, and was missing several small parts, like the engine main bearing, rudder, one of the windscreen vents, the rear deck....quite a little list. The brasswork was fine, but all the metalwork was badly corroded. It looked like this:
I've now done a repaint to original specification, using John Chapman's splendid boat as an example - thanks John! The engine bearing was made by first finding the right size bolt, and then very carefully drilling a hole straight through it. The rear deck was cut from a piece of mahogany. Still a few bits to do, mainly plumbing, but we're getting there. Made the rudder (not visible) out of some sheet brass. The hull was re-glued as well, as a lot of the original adhesive had perished.
The hardest bit was getting the colour right! The cream lacquer I bought was much too white, so I ended up mixing it with some dark varnish....this gave me the right colour, but made it quite thick and hard to brush on, so I used lots of thin coats, sanding them down inbetween. I'm very pleased with the end result, as it gave me that nice thick "lacquer shell" effect you find on the Bowman boats.
Anyway, yer 'tez:

Makes me feel guilty about my Arrow, do you thiunks its worth bringing a part finished model to STIA. It will have the ME1 engine in it.

I can't see why not! It'll be interesting for visitors to be able to see the guts of the Arrow - the construction's rather more complex than the Bowman/Hobbies hulls, and once you put the sides on (and oh boy what a barrel of laughs that is!) the construction details are no longer visible.

Thanks gents, and yes indeed I intend to sail her - that was the main purpose of the restoration, to make her pond-proof

Don't mate....one of the little luxuries of my job is that I tend to have a fair bit of time off around Christmas - I had nearly three weeks this time, plenty of tinkering time, and for once we didn't travel all over the country. Nothing like a bit of gentle tinkering while you digest Christmas lunch.....another glass of wine, perchance? Oh, I rather think so!

I have had about 2 hours this week to try and get my stuff in order for STIA, I have to get the partially completed hull from the shed and 'rebuild' to a presentable state!
