Good morning Superlefty! Welcome to Freesteam!
Not quite my sphere of steam, but I am sure one of our members will be able to help - we have steamers on here who like bigger more involved stuff as well as toy steam.
Hope to hear more from you!

What scale is the DeWinton? If it is full size then you will have a problem trying to fire under the firehole door, as the firehole door itself isn't wide/tall enough to allow a shovel at an angle to drop coal just inside the door!

I am not sure what scale it is but I can send you the plans if you want.

Well, to make it easier what gauge is it? Scale for gauges varies so it is more difficult to fathom out on occasions!

Greeting Superlefty you have go to a good forum for advice 'hedghog spikes' are spikes placed in the bottom of the boiler to aid heat transfer. Have a look at the following link

Also this link will tell you more about the de Winton locomotive

The full size De Winton's were produced in 2 ft gauge. Possibly 2 ft 3 in and 2 ft 6 in... Here is a picture of 'Chaloner' in the Leighton Buzzard Railway Pages Park shed:

It usually runs double headed with Baguley 'Rishra' on special days and visits other railways from time to time
Alan Keef have a replica De Winton called 'Taffy' as well.
