Bing with Dynamo *NEW VIDEO*

EDIT: New Video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9Cx128DQBM

I recently picked up two Bing engines (both with dynamos) from Robin Corsiglia off ebay.

The previous owner stated this one is either a Model 10/116/1(made 1914 to 1924) or 130/531 (made 1925-1929), I'm not sure which one though. Confused

The following video shows it on its first run "out of the box" or as arrived. (The only repair I made so far was replacing the wire from the light post to the dynamo and the light bulb)

I was only running it on 2 of the 3 wicks. The seals need replacement, and I was using the old spring belt that came with the engine. I was surprised this little engine even lit the light bulb without the minor repairs, and in fact it did quite well! Very Happy

After the repairs it should be a great runner!

So, here is a short video of it running in the dark. (I will make a video of it later running in the daylight and a few more at sunset so the light can be seen.)

And here is a picture I took while it was running (you can see the bulb is lit)

What a super engine Nick, a beauty.

As a matter of interest has Robin given up collecting?  I notice his website no longer seems to be on line.  His site was a huge influence when I first got into toy steam.

He sure seems to be selling off a lot of engines.

Several have been listed with very reasonable buy it nows and sold fast.

Beautiful machine Nick!! Smile

Very nice indeed  Very Happy
Spokesmann

I do like that, not my collecting sphere, but a very desirable and photogenic set up.
JJ

Very nice Engine Nick, it sounds very individual too, it makes a lovely sound.
silverfoxsteam

A very fine engine indeed Nick.

Does it have a trademark stamped anywhere? My understanding is that the 10/.../.. style model number is Bing Werke (post-WW1), the 130/.... is the older Gebruder Bing style.  I'll check my reference books and see what turns up.

I too have noticed that Robin's website has gone. I've had some dealings with him lately so I'll ask him the question.

Back to you all later!

Robin Corsiglia lives in the US and was an early, website-owning, collector. He retired a couple of years ago and is thinning out a pretty vast collection I believe! His website's server broke a few years ago and he dodn't bother reinstating it. (There's still a link via Jon O's site.)

Like Nick, I've bought from him and my new Falk is on it's way as we speak!

Nick - I see the boiler end is stamped. If it's BW then you've got a 10/166/1 - post 1918 (there is a 10/116/2 but that has a water gauge). If it's stamped GBN then it's a pre WW1 model 130/531.

Could you possibly post a picture of the burner please? I think I might have one like it that I've been trying to identify!

Thx Steve  Very Happy
Nick

Thanks for all the info Stephen! Sounds like it's 130/531? (The video should answer your questions and I've got abunch of pictures to post later)

Enjoy!

(Don't forget to click the HQ option. Wink )

Stephen, these pictures show all the markings on the engine:

Brilliant Nick! A beautiful engine, complete and in full working order - WOW!

Your video does answer the questions, and the burner is a match for mine, now I know!

It's definately a 130/531, Gebruder Bing, c100 years old - doesn't it make you think eh?

What does the 'DRGM' on the cylinder signify?
Spokesmann

Thats a lot of markings.

Stephen, what kind of books are you using? (I'd love to find some)

DRGM = Deutsches Reichs Gebrauchs Muster = German Reich Registered Design (I guess a trademark/patent Confused )

The 2 decals DRGM have stood up quite well on the cylinder and dynamo.

I can't believe we run these 100 year old toy engines, they should be in a museum! Laughing
Spokesmann

Anything 100 yers or more in officially classed as an antique.

I'm fortunate enough to have repros of Bing catalogues from 1898, 1912-15 and 1927-32.

Thanks for explaining the 'DRGM' bit. I'm sure you're right about it but I'll look into that a bit deeper, get some more background info.

As for the museum - I reckon the best ones are the 'living museums', which is pretty much what we as collectors have - agreed?
Nick

I completely agree about the living museum... much more fun! Laughing

I received this information from a friend:

Quote:
You are right about the DRGM, it does mean "Deutsches Reich Gebrauch Muster" a provisional patent mark meaning 'registered design'.

This logo puts the engine to around 1907-12, and the embossed endcap dates it to around 1900-09

So from you, I have learned it is a model 130/531 and from him, I have narrowed the date from 1907-09. Making the engine 100-102 years old! Shocked
Spokesmann

Show just how old that overtype MM configuration is! I love the end boiler cap detailing.

Totally agree about the endcap mark (1900-9), but the other trademark completely contemporary with it. Bob Gordon (Shire album's 'Toy Steam Engines') puts the trademark with the GNB in little circles (as per yours) at 1902-7. So your average is 1905.

The Bing trademarks got less elaborate over the years and of course the big change from GB (Gebruder Bing) to BW (Bing Werke) happened in 1918-9.

Good stuff this! I wish the other Nuremberg makers were half as well documented!
Nick

Stephen, the date has changed again! Laughing

That same friend has found it in the 1912-15 catalogue, it is a 130/531 and originally priced at 15Mk.

Yep - it's listed in the 1914 catalogue, but that doesn't mean to say that it was new that year. 'Saison - Neuheiten' I don't think means 'new this season', rather sort of, 'special this season' and whilst these suppliments may of course feature new models, they may also have been used to boost sales of existing or re-launched models. Whilst it's tempting to assume that the 1912 catalogue is comprehensive of the range, and as your engine doesn't appear in it therefore it wasn't made before then, but I really do believe that it's not a safe assumption.

The GNB 'Bavaria' mark is clearly used at this time, but the endcap mark is an older one I'm sure! Without all the catalogues year by year, we can't say for sure when or for how long particular models were available. With that end cap, I'd still 'plump' for an earlier date.

I am enjoying this.   Very Happy
Nick

Wow Stephen, I must have missed your post...

Thanks for taking time to post those pictures for me! I hope I can find a few of those catalogs sometime soon.
